Icon not working????

My father inlaw just got a new computer with windows 8 I am not familiar with windows 8 ( and he has no clue on how to use a computer). So I help him set it up so this is what is happening
When he starts the computer and goes to the start button all the icon show up and when he presses the E internet icon it comes up with unable to connect then theres a push to reset button and nothing happens. Know when he touches the background (personal home I am guessing) icon his home background comes up and shows google chrome and when he touches it it connects and down in the left hand corner of screen the E internet icon is there and when he touches it the internet comes up.
So how do I get the E internet icon to work in the start mode. I hope I explained it right because I am not sure what everything is called on windows 8 ,it took me awhile just to set a password for the screen.
He can not even shut off his computer without calling me and asking how ,so he has no clue what he did

I'm not familiar with any "E" Icon for connecting to the net, if this is a computer on it's first startup, it may be something put in by the OEM, is it an eMachines? Before you start it up, make sure it's plugged into a Cable Modem or a Router and that you have service. Also, windows 8, before it does anything else will identify your network connection - It will show you a list of available Wifi connections, ask you to log into one, and after that ask you if you want to log in to a Microsoft account. If there is no Wifi it will connect right up to any hard wired LAN, IF it is connected to a hard wired LAN.

You'll have to describe what this computer is, is it a laptop, or a tablet? All I can think of the "E" button would be the Service Provider's 3G connection, if this were a tablet. Maybe you can take a picture of what's happening and post it.

A new Windows 8 computer will boot up to a Lockscreen, all you have to do is click on the lockscreen and insert any passwords. There will be some icons on the bottom, you don't need to click those. It will say "Click Here to Start" and that's all you need to do, then it will open up the Start Screen.

Anyway am not sure if what you are seeing is on the lockscreen or in the start screen, if you can take a pic with a handheld device and post it, that will help.

Make it easy on him and you and install Classic Shell (free) or Start8 ($5). Give you a Windows 7 like Start button and boots you directly to the Desktop if you want. Then you can take as much time as you need to learn to use the Metro Apps.

I've never seen a Big E icon like that, ever. Windows 8, or 8.1? I don't do 8.1, and don't intend to. But if he's referring to Internet Explorer, you should make sure you are connected to the Net first, the best way to do that is right click on the Network and Sharing icon down by the clock, which looks like a TV with a spoon attached. It'll tell you there, if you are connected.

If they check the Network and Sharing area and it says they ARE connected, then it's possible Internet Explorer is misconfigured, so

1) Open your Network and Sharing center, the little TV Icon with Spoon on the left side, it's on the Desktop near the clock, down on the lower right side of the screen. Find out if you are connected to the net, which it will tell you if you open that.

2) If it is connected and IE still doesn't work, post back and I'll walk you through some other settings.

Yes the computer is connected to the net. If I select Google Chrome it will take me to the internet

But not for IE? Ok, right click on the desktop and go to "Personalize" - Go to 'Change Desktop Icons" and put the Control Panel on the desktop so you can get to it.

Open Control Panel and Go to "Network and Internet" and find "Internet Options" - Go to the 'Connections" property sheet and pull up "Lan Settings" - If there is a Proxy set in there, delete it and uncheck the box.

You may want to click the "Setup" Box if that doesn't work and re-run the network setup.
