BSOD SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (intelppm.sys)

Hey guys just got a new laptop. HP ENVY TouchSmart m6 Sleekbook. I don't know how I'm feeling about it, but I am having one problem with it. It keeps randomly restarting. It seems to only do it while defragging with defraggler. A blue screen will come up "Your PC ran into a problem and needs to restart. We're just collecting some error info and we'll restart for you." Underneath that it says "If you'd like to know more you can search online for this error: SYSTEM_THREAD_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (intelppm.sys)"

This is my first time working with windows 8 and it's frustrating having to deal with this restarting. Also, after it restarts, I get a random prompt that says "In order to apply these changes windows needs to restart" and I can choose to restart now or restart later.

Thank you for all the help.

Woops, doing some digging and apparently this is a bsod (I know what a bsod is in windows 7, didn't know they changed the way windows 8 crashes) So this thread probably has to be moved. Sorry :/

Welcome to Windows 8 Forums!

I'll tell ya this right now, don't use Defraggler for Windows 8 - Windows 8 has a much better Optimizer built in, schedule it to run at Midnight every night and it will keep all of your drives optimised.

If you HAVE to use a 3rd party Optimization prog, try Raxco Perfect Disk, it costs a few bucks but it is worth it, it prevents fragmentation as you work. It's designed for SSD drives but it works great for Mechanical drives.

Also, if this has happened in the middle of a Defrag process by Defraggler, there is a really good chance this has messed up your Drive Indexes, so you should run an external drive scan, I mean, external to Windows 8.

Download Hiren's Boot CD from the link below, and boot to it, find "Dos Programs" and in there, find "Hard Drive Tools" - You will see every manufacturer Drive Scanning program right there. But I always try GWscan first, it can test a large number of manufacturer's drives and repair them. Run Gwscan and do the first 2 tests, if it says "Read Element Failure" then do the full disk scan.

After you do this, boot back up to 8 and run a CHKDSK on the drive, 8 will automatically figure out what level of CHKDSK it will need to do. Let that happen, and after that, use the Windows 8 Drive OPtimizer - and Delete Defraggler, which is a fine program for XP, but not good at all to use for Windows Vista, 7 and 8

Alright, Good to know, I use defraggler with windows 7. However, it still crashed while it was just sitting not doing anything and idling. I am updating all my drivers right now.

Read my edit, download Hiren's Boot CD and run GWscan as described in my edit. Your drive may have developed bad areas due to the BSOD during Defraggler.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
I went to work and I left it on the table running windows defrag. Came home and it was fine. I picked up the computer to put it on my lap and it bsod'd. This time it said "KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (intelppm.sys)"

This is different that the first one. I updated all my drivers and it defragged without problems so I am wondering if it is a problem with HP 3D Drive Guard. It may have just been coincidence that the BSOD occurred when I moved it but I don't think so. I'll run that GW Scan to see if it shows anything.

I would stop using Defraggler altogether, it's really not for windows 8. Also, if you have a solid state drive you very much should not be using it because it is wrecking your drive with each use- Unless they have updated the program to accommodate Solid State, which they haven't done last time I looked.

However, after looking up "Intelppm.sys" it appears that Defraggler really is not the cause of the error, Intelppm.sys is, and it's been a problem since Windows XP. I'm not sure what it is or where it came from, apparently it's a file that comes with Windows. I am not finding any clear information on it anywhere. I would try to re-install that file. Maybe copy it from another system that's working.

Now that I see that Intelppm.sys is the cause of BSODs all over, then you should only try GWscan if you want to, you should, because your drive may have developed unreadable spots due to being Blue Screened in the middle of what's basically a "move" process.

If the GWscan process does not reveal any errors, then you should try an "On-Place Install", that should replace any bad copies of "Intelppm.sys"

You can also, disable "Intelppm" with no Ill effects, there are instructions how to do this from the registry here:

I wasn't using defraggler. It is off the machine. I'm debating whether or not I should just return this machine. It's less than 24 hours old, I shouldn't be having these problems. I know it's software but it's bs, I don't even have a cd drive.

I would, if it's brand new. Yah you would have to put Hiren's on a Flash Drive, which may be a pain. There is a program that will allow you to take an ISO file and move it to a bootable flash drive, I'll find the link for future ref.

Actually it appears that newer versions of Defraggler can do "Boot Time Defrag" - I don't know if the free version can do it, but I'd try that if it is included in the free version, next time you install it.

A brand new computer should NOT be giving any errors, but before you bring it back, try to disable the Intelppm service the way described in that last link, see if it stops blue screening, cos the article says you can remove it if it keeps causing problems.

FWIW it's a ufei setup, which is good if you want fast boot times, but I can do that with an ssd, so it's even more of a pain.

I'm also getting alot of critical warnings in Event Viewer about certain drivers.

Alright this is plain B*****IT. First off, I have to make a bootable UEFI flashdrive in order to try and repair this, So I go through the steps of that because I don't have a cd or a cd drive, then I have to download a windows 8 iso, in order to do that I need to get a product key which isn't provided anywhere on the pc or in the packaging. I finally retrieve it with a product key extractor ONLY TO BE TOLD IT IS NO GOOD FOR A RETAIL VERSION OF WINDOWS 8. What kind of BS system are these companies running? I can't change my battery, I can't change my ram, I don't have a cd drive, I don't have a windows product key, I have no way of reinstalling windows. This seems like it should be a netbook but it is CLEARLY an 800 dollar LAPTOP *as advertised*. Last time I checked laptops actually worked and were useful for something other than a 6 pound knife that I can use to cut carrots. Quit emulating Apple, if I wanted a MAC I wold have bought that, not a windows pc. This is being returned tomorrow and if the morons at best buy give me any crap about it I'm going to go ballistic.

I'd bring it back, trade it for something else. What a disappointment!

You probably need the "Core" version of Windows 8 to reinstall it, which I believe pulls it's activation out of the BIOS somehow. there was someone in here a few months back looking for a copy of it, we found a download link for one, I'll see if I can pull it up.

I did a search on that model, and there are a lot of complaints about it, similar to what you posted.

If it was the only laptop like this I could understand, but basically everything there was like a macbook. Maybe I will get a Samsung ativ or something.

Or you can trade it for the AMD version, it would not be using that Intelppm.sys file.

A client of mine was going to buy an HP touchscreen system, I guess I'll be talking him out of that now.

Hardware isn't bad, it's just not what I want. The only two big complaints I have are a mushy keyboard and the trackpad wants to grab your finger because of the grooves in it. The next one would be the battery and the cd drive.

You cannot change the battery? Sounds like a surface clone. Dump it. I checked the specs, it's got good hardware, AMD and Intel versions. But the Intel version is resurrecting a major flaw, with that Intelppm.sys error, which has been in there since XP.

Well, that sucks. Try to find a new Intel Chipset driver, you can get it from Intel if you look for the chipset.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
Just got a new laptop. That version of windows 8 was corrupted. The setup process on this one was different and it is acting differently as I'm using it.

Good, hope it works better. For a new system, don't download all 500 windows updates at once, do em only a few at a time and only the ones you think are important and relevant to the system.
