    Hi all
Much as I like W7 I have to say once you've learned W8 then it's much faster --especially on lower end gear (32 bit version on cheaper laptops and netbooks).

On faster machines it's difficult to say as these machines work very well with W7 in any case.

Booting however is an order of magnitude faster.

Note however that W8 might be missing a whole slew of features and services which would be available on the full product and so the current speed won't be indicative of the final version.

However once people have got used to the fast boot MS is likely to do everything possible to keep the speed.

Note that on tablets and mobile phones - waiting for a minute or so for these devices to become ready is NOT acceptable so MS needs to keep boot as short as possible on W8.

    Cheers

That leads me to believe that a final full blown system may perform close to what we see in Windows7. Performance on an ARM processor will probably be different though. That will be interesting to see.

Yeah, I get the Metro Screen quite quickly but the time to usability still isn't all that much different.

Granted, Win8 8102 is a bit quicker to usability but I don't have nearly the number of programs installed on Win8 8102 (though I am getting close) as I do on Win7 SP1 Ultimate x64.

I am in the same boat. I imagine that once I have a plethora of programs installed it will slow down dramatically... But I will wait for RTM before I do that.

    I don't blame you, Avalon.
I got a bit carried away installing most of my stuff.
Unfortunately AutoCad Architecture 2012 won't install on Win8 (I've already updated the programs I wrote for AC 2011 - which does install) or else I might not have been back in Win7 at all (if only I didn't have to work).

Yes, well I think the day where we don't have to go back to W7 is rapidly approaching.
Any particular reason as to why it won't install, or just a general compatibility issue?

Meh, I haven't figured out why AC 2012 won't install as I haven't really looked into it much after the error message since I can just boot back into Win7.

If it still doesn't install at Win8 Beta time, I'll check it out more thouroughly.

Fair enough, that seems to make sense.
I'm also interested in how Windows 8 will compete with 7 in a marketing sense. I wonder how the price point will work out.

    Indeed, that will be interesting.
Currently, as far as I can tell, old-time users of Win95 through Win7 are quite ambivalent about the direction MS appears to be taking with Win8 up to this point (I love it - I hope they continue).

As you mention, it will, indeed, be interesting to not only see the price points but the receptiveness by the Windows community at large, as well.
