W8.1 Ent iso download needs 3rd party downloader !!!!

    Hi there
I like to avoid installing ANYTHING unless I know wxactly what it's doing

However when downloading the W8.1 Enterprise software from Ms you need some stupid "net downloader".

Why can't I just get the link and download the .iso -- I HATE all these 3rd party "Helper" programs --who knows what other data these things collect / send to Ms or other people.

Ms -- this is NOT a good idea -- I don't think a lot of businesses will like this approach of downloading software via 3rd party "Helpers".

    Cheers

    Hi Jimbo,

What's the point of your post? If it's venting, I have no comment.

If you need a workaround, click the address bar, delete everything before the second http entry and press Enter.

    What the NetSession Interface isn't:

    • It is not spyware, malware, or other intrusive software
    • It is not a security threat, and does not view or share any private data on your machine
    • It is not permanently installed on your machine; you have the option to remove it at any time

    Hi there
OK -- but I'm used to just downloading the files -- maybe I'm old fashioned but I DO like to know what's on my systems -- I'm not the one who ever gets bothered by Spy / Ad / cr@p ware or viruses -- you can read 100's of posts on these very Forums from people requesting help in Virus / spyware etc removal. Ms might itself be OK but if this sort of thing becomes a universal trend then you can see how easy it would be to install all sorts of stuff on people's machines from other people who don't have the same "QC" as Ms. !!.

    Cheers

    Jimbo,

If you want to know what's on your system, before you start venting do a research on Akamai and think of reasons why Microsoft uses a download manager to assist with downloading very large files.

I suppose your technical problem is solved, so please mark the thread as such.

Must admit I agree with jimbo to some extent... don't tell me "to download you must install... blah, blah blah..." I may have a preference for some other download manager, if that's OK with them

P.S. What I have found on my work PC is that it keeps popping up asking for Username/password for proxy server... may just be 'cos of permissions gone awry, but just an FYI...

Actually, the window says "you need to install", and "need" is not the same thing as "must". If you prefer another manager, just use the workaround I provided above. I just don't see the reason to gripe about it. Neither I see a reason for myself to continue this discussion

    Hi there
actually it isn't because if the download is interrupted then you have to download the whole kybosh again from the beginning (nearly 4GB) OK I've fast broadband but there are quite a few out there who don't have it.

The old download manager from TechNet re-starts the download if the download is interrupted. If a download manager can't handle re-start what's the point of it in the first place.

    Jimbo,

    I'm not sure I understand.

You don't want to use third party software, right? Then if you choose not to use Akamai and go with my workaround (using direct URL to the file), then if download is interrupted, your browser or download manager is to hande all download issues.

Akamai is supposed to help those with bad connections by resuming interrupted downloads. It's entirely possible that it can't handle all possible interruptions, but you're not using it anyway.

I've demonstrated you the way to bypass Akamai installation and download ISO the way you like. So what's your technical problem, really?
