After you jumped through the hoops and supplied an email/password, the next page shows more info you fill in, then after that you will see the Akamai downloader popup/prompt. Even though I downloaded their downloader, I scrolled down the popup box (it doesn't show a scroll bar), and the popup will show text that says something like "download fail"? or "can't download"?. Click ok and then a direct click will appear on the right side of the page. Just copy/paste in your browser or use your own downloader.

Need is the same as requirement, it means there is no option. Bad choice of words, perhaps, but nevertheless, that is what it says.

I've had to deal with that Akamai thing with HP and DELL downloads. Look Jimbo, it is pretty safe you should not have to worry about it. But it's Active X so IE chokes on it unless you have ActiveX filtering shut off. Actually it uses Java too, so your Java has to be perfect before you try to use that to download.

That explains something; I was trying to figure out why I never saw a download manager when I downloaded 8.1 Enterprise, though it seemed everyone else did. I used a different browser.

    Nuff said ???

I never worry about Akamai. We use them at work and it helps tremendously with download speeds when we distribute things to our customers. By having Akamai caching content for us geographically, people in all parts of the world get fast downloads as they use the Akamai hop close to them.

Dell uses them to bundle downloads when you are downloading a full set of drivers for a system, it has worked flawless for me except where IE had problems, there have been a few cases where it totally failed to run. Java errors.

This surprises me, that MS is now using it, I've never known them to use any download managers.
