    Windows 8 Freezes

I have a 3 week old Acer. I started having trouble with freezing of the open/ running software one week ago. Problem now is, it may take 3-4 time to sign in. once in, say to Streets and Trips, when I try to open a file, the program will stop responding.

I have tried to download Windows 8 updates, get to 5 of 7 then program stops responding.

I tried cont alt del. end task, to no result. Then Hard reset. Then may take 3 - 4 attempts to sing in again to windows screen.
This process has been attempted at least 20+ times (expecting a different result). Can you set me down the right path please.

    Hi Mike,

i am afraid that i am one of the guys that cannot help you, but

"with freezing of the open/ running software"

what do you mean with this? Did you run a software program and did you end this? That could be your problem.

If it was me, i would go to the programs/features in Control panel and remove every third party program (but that is me).

Also i would install the updates one by one instead of all together. Then you can Always NOT install the one where the update stops.

Will this help.....i don't know, don't think so either, but that is what i would do.

    Hi Jeffrjs,

What I did was ; start computer via power button, using windows, start Streets and Trips. In Streets and Trips, open a map record. The program, Streets and Trips stops responding and will not close.

I started Task Manager, Streets and trips not responding. End task. Try to close Task Manager. Some time will close, sometimes not.

If not then computer needs power off because keyboard or mouse have no effect. So I have turned power off via power button.

This problem is not limited to Streets and Trips. This will happen in Control panel, Foxfire Search Engine, C Cleanner.
MS Office and Streets and Trips were loaded from my original Cd's.

I have deleted C Cleaner. Hope this helps

My compute is Acer V3-551-8469, AMD A8, 4 gig, 500 gig hd. I use it for my work and e mails only.

When I originally got the computer I did not have Windows automatic updates installed. I was not successful at installing updates as of the third day of problem, (computer froze). As of the 5th day of problem, I set Windows to run automatic updates. That was when the computer installed 4 of 7 updates. froze on installing #5 of 7.

cCleaner would not cause any problems, on the contrary. Your hard drive may have developed read errors, which will cuase freezes when you try to bring up programs. Did you have any Blue Screens or anything else happen that caused you to do a forced shutdown, it would have happened right before these problems started.

To check for Read Errors, download Hiren's Boot CD from my link below, boot from it, go into Dos Programs, and in there go to Hard Drive tools, look for GWscan (on the 3rd page of HD apps). Run GWscan and run the 1st 2 tests. If your drive had developed read errors, it will then give you an opportunity to run a full drive scan, do that and it should fix the errors.

In my experience, Freezing has been related to Hard Drive errors and have been repaired after doing a full disk scan with an external drive scanning tool (external to Windows 8). After you do the GWscan, then you can boot to Mini XP which is on the Hiren's disk, and you can run a CHKDSK from there, it will be in the Program Menu for Mini XP, just type the drive letter for your system drive and it will run the short CHKDSK.

You can't do a full CHKDSK from within Windows, because if the main surface of the drive has Read Errors, that would do no good. Sometimes the drive indexes get messed up and you have to run the external scan.

    well Mike,

if it is the disk i would add another disk and install Win 8 there. If that gives a solution, you can use the older disk for other purposes after formatting.

Maybe you have a spare disk lying around?
