Solved Allow copying from network to protected OS folders

Hey guys,

I'm searching like crazy but I can't seem to find a solution. I like to disable to protection that prevents me from copying files from a mapped network drive directly to \Windows\etc. I need to copy the file to a local drive first and I find that annoying.

I've already disabled zone security warnings and the open file warning but this one I can't seem to find.

And please don't preach security to me, I'm aware of the risks and I'd like to decide for myself what I can and can't do, thank you .

You would have to make an Admin share, rather than a Homegroup share. Enable the administrator account and give it a simple password, then use that account in Advanced File Sharing. Give it ALL permissions. Use that account to access the Windows 8 system when you map the System drive.

I've always used this kind of MS networking for LAN's and it's never prevented me from moving stuff into my windows folder from a remote machine.

There you go, you can add either "Administrator" or "AdministratorS", the settings are in "Permissions" - Give these users all three permissions.

Thanks, but I think you misunderstand.

I'm not copying to the network, I'm copying from the network. Windows 8 is not allowing me to copy something to C:\Windows\system32 if the source is network. If I copy it to my desktop first, it works fine.

Ps. I'm not using homegroups, I use advanced sharing. I'm admin locally, and admin on the shares as well.

I've never tried it like that, and I have both PCs set up with sharing the exact same way. But you are correct, it is not allowing it to me moved directly into the Windows folder.

I'd just go to the second system and drag it to your target system from there.

Exactly, I just don't get that popup because I've disabled and tweaked a few other things as mentioned in the OP. But essentially, that is the problem right there.

Do it the reverse way. Windows 8 has some really irritating security settings on system files and folders.

What do you mean, the reverse way?

Go to the system from which you want to copy from, and copy it into your remote windows drive from there, I just did it here, and I was able to. I copied something from my computer into the Windows folder on my other system.

Is your UAC set to the lowest possible setting on all machines?

Also, it seems like you are describing default behaviour, there really is no way to change it to give you access the way you want:

Honestly I'm not sure what happened, but it's working. It still asks me to provide administrator permission which is fine, but clicking 'Continue' now copies the file, whereas in the past it woudn't even popup and just do nothing. On my other system it still gives the 'location not found' popup like you had above, but it could be I still need to run the zone security and open file warning scripts.

I'm sorry I can't provide details as to what fixed it, I've not done anything ... I was asleep for the past few hours .

Just remember the folders you used for the move, and take note of them. I was unable to copy from mapped drives into by Root folder on my C drive or the Windows folder. But I was able to copy files TO a mapped Windows System Drive, right into the Windows Folder.

Also, check the permissions on what you copied, and compare to files that failed to copy over, and in the future apply the same permissions to files you wanna move.
