Solved sfc generates 90-160 MB logs

Hello,

My Windows 8 pro x64 is installed yesterday, behaves exactly like the old one from one week ago, exactly like the previous installation. If I run "sfc /scannow" my CBS.log is around 90-100 MB in size, it was 160 MB at some point. I am booting from a 60GB SSD if it matters. The system runs fine, I have no errors so the amount of errors reported by sfc is just... weird.

Dism reports every time that everything is OK, no errors found. Chkdsk also says nothing is wrong.
I did everything that was written in the sfc tutorials from within Windows, I ran sfc several times, I exported the log to sfcdetails.log and it has over 60 MB...

I looked into the file and all reported errors are the same type, like the one below with "file is missing" :
Code:
2013-07-25 09:54:06, Info CSI 00000012 [SR] Cannot repair member file [l:24{12}]"1394ohci.sys" of 1394.inf, Version = 6.2.9200.16384, pA = PROCESSOR_ARCHITECTURE_AMD64 (9), Culture neutral, VersionScope = 1 nonSxS, PublicKeyToken = {l:8 b:31bf3856ad364e35}, Type = [l:24{12}]"driverUpdate", TypeName neutral, PublicKey neutral in the store, file is missing

Now it's impossible to have the amount of errors reported, something else must be happening here.
Any ideas ?

Thanks.

Hello jdaniel,

I totally agree with your logic, your findings, and your conclusion (implied) that sfc /scannow might not be all that it should. Specifically, I have seen many individuals report that "everything is fine" but they are compelled to do a "super-clean" check via running sfc /scannow only to be disappointed that it found many errors. This is why I recommend that users, not having a specific problem, should not run sfc /scannow. With that said, I am running it right now on my perfectly clean test rig. BTW, I looked at your log (briefly) and saw many missing files associated with the AMD architecture. Now, my test rig is an AMD based laptop so let's see what happens. I'll update my thread with my findings and we'll compare notes at that time so hang in ther and I'll be back shortly.

Thanks for the quick reply,

My only AMD device is my video card, an ATi/AMD Radeon 6870. My CPU is an Intel i5 2500k. The mainboard is based on intel Z68 chipset.

Thank you.

Following an advice in a different thread in this forum I actually ran "Dism /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth" even if it told me that there is no problem at all with my system and... surprise, it corrected the errors.
Now sfc reports that there are no problems with my Windows.
Again, strange but... solved now.

Thank you again for the help and for the great forum.

Ok, this is getting somewhat interesting. Did your scan actually report integrity violations or did you just check your log out of curiosity? Also were you connected to the internet when you ran SFC? If so, please check the DISM folder (same location) for a file called DISM.txt. Take a peek in there and see if you find any failure to connect warnings. I'm still testing but I thought I'd feed back some information as I go.

That's exactly what I was try to work on. The sfc /scannow appears to be working with DISM (even in the sfc /scannow mode) and I was trying to prove that the DISM command you entered did not really fix anything. I believe it really set some parameters for the next run of sfc to ignore those files that were missing. Think about it for a minute. You just did a clean install and you had 190mbs worth of errors? No way! Now, you run this magic bullet message and all is well? No way! IMHO, it is impossible for a clean install to have missed the installation of all those files that were reported as missing. Oh well, you are happy, and now you are bailing out. Good luck.

OK, I have competed my testing and now I understand why the DISM run (after the sfc run) appears to make everything look peachy when it already was in many cases (but not all). Anyway, I would have to write a book to explain it. So, from here on, my recommendation will always be for the OP to run the DISM command (if they have errors from the sfc run) because it makes no sense to try and work directly with the sfc results when we have a magic bullet command available.

OK, then what exactly did it repaired ?
Also, I am now looking in the Event Viewer and I have an error that appeared after sfc reported that everything is good :

The Open Procedure for service "BITS" in DLL "C:\Windows\System32\bitsperf.dll" failed. Performance data for this service will not be available. The first four bytes (DWORD) of the Data section contains the error code. Event ID is 1008.

As I remember BITS is related to the Windows Updates and.... Windows Updates does not work anymore...

Will update after I manage to fix this also.

@David Bailey
It is set to manual and "running" atm. Anyway, WU works after a restart, not a single error atm.
I also ran a new sfc scan just to see if it reports anything new, again it said everything is OK.

@JustATest
So just to get this, the only thing that was broken was the information/description/list database ? The files were actually OK ?

Thanks.

You had a ton of missing files; yes? After the DISM fix, have all missing files actually been restored (numCorruptions = 0) or did DISM just set a flag to ignore those files (via fix metadata) and now your subsequent sfc /scannow run simply ignores those file checks; thereby, fixing a problem you actually never had?

There is no way those files were actually missing. If you look at the files, the entire Windows is there. All the drivers are in the list, 194, acpi, video drivers and the list goes on. The system would not start/load without these drivers and system files. I also checked (random) some of the names I do not know and they do exist.
I guess the question remains... what did it actually repaired ? The repair function ? :)

That's exactly what I was trying to get at by doing my comprehensive testing; however, when it seemed like you were happy that your problem was fixed (and that appeared to be the end of it), I simply aborted my testing. Anyway, my best guess would be that it actually fixed nothing in your case; however, since you didn't verify if the files were actually there after the first run, we may have no way of telling unless you take the time to look at the timestamps of a few of the originally reported missing files and see if they were recreated, coincident to the time of the DISM run. I guess the moral of your story confirms (for me at least). If it ain't borke, don't try to fix it. BTW, I agree with your opening statements and your last statement and I would advise everyone to only run sfc /scannow if a specific need arises. If everything is fine, just leave it alone. Good luck.
