    Booting from USB or DVD

In Advanced Startup there is the option to boot from a removable device.

It has an icon for a usb drive & a disk, which I assume means CD or DVD.

The question is, is this option the same as setting the boot order in the BIOS ?

I tried it just to test it & when restarting, the process hesitated like it was looking for a removable device.
    I had no device inserted.

Then my computer continued to boot like always.

    This intrigues me.

    EDIT--

I was wondering if choosing this option would be a one time event or if it would change the boot order permanently ?

    Hi David,

Wow, you certainly are a digger; yes? Now first off, please understand that there is no technical merit behind my response but I know one thing for sure. The methodolgy you describe will not permanently change the boot order in the BIOS. Moreover, I believe that Windows remains in complete control of a restart, similar to when you are going through the installation process, and there are several reboots required. So, IMHO, I don't think the BIOS boot order ever enters into the picture using the methods you describe. However, I have been wrong many times before and it wouldn't surprise me to be wrong again. So, let's see if anyone else responds with their take on you question.

    Cheers!

@David Bailey: I still have a pending rep set aside for that great DDD fix you provided for McDougle. So, what's DDD mean? That is the new nickname I created for your suggested fix and I now refer to it as DDD which is short for "Dave's DISM Dazzler."

    Cheers!

It's my opinion that it is a one time event.

I've read posts where people say they can't get their usb drive to boot.

It would seem they do not know about this option.

I figured starting a thread on the subject might provide information that would be useful to people.
& satisfy my curiosity as well.

If I press "advanced Startup" all it does is reboot my computer. It does not show me any extended boot options, at the time I press it, or when the system comes back up. But I have old systems, you have to have UEFI to have this work?

    I have UEFI.
    It might be needed.
Someone else may respond with a better answer.
    Like BRINK.

I can't test it on an older system because I don't have one.

For Windows 8 Pre-install PC's, the USB/CD/DVD software would need to fully supports Windows 8, uEFI, GPT & Secure Boot, to boot.
Same as with the UEFI/BIOS firmware, One Time Boot Menu.

Could you elaborate on, "the USB/CD/DVD software" ?

Would that be software already on the computer ?

When I made a backup on a usb drive the usb drive was formatted.
    I copied the recovery partition.
