Windows freezes at right clicking in my computer

I have had this problem with my hp Envy 6 ever since I got it. I installed windows 8 on it however when ever i would right click anywhere in my computer (the view/refresh menu would come however the new/view/sort one would not come) it no matter if it be with the trackpad or a mouse the blue circle would start spinning forever and i would be forced to close the folder i currently have:

    Core i-5 1.7 Ghz
    4.00 Gb RAM
    64 bit Windows 8

(I am not all that sure whether or not i have windows 8 or 8.1 so i can't really say)

I have provided a recording that i have provided in the attachement below:

    Something wrong.zip

    And thanks b4 hand

System in Control Panel will tell you whether it is 8 or 8.1.

I have a similar issue (win8). Everything will be working fine, then randomly when I right click on an icon, or select "properties" in the ribbon, the circular mouse icon will occur indefinitely and the window will freeze.

Alta - can you let me know if you are also getting this - I also find that when this occurs, my File Explorer suddenly refuses to show anything apart from Favourites and Libraries and even these show no files. The address green rescanning bar goes along like it's searching but nothing happens. Everything still works from shortcuts or the start menu and the files are still there, just Explorer won't show them. Also all icons from this point on anywhere are blank white. Again, it all still works, just doesn't show properly. The only fix is a reboot.

    I've attached a screenshot.

Not trying to hijack your thread, just that these 2 things seems to be linked on mine so wondering if you're also getting the same. If not I'll post a new thread.

The first thing that comes to mind is you could have installed a program that made a bad entry in the context menu handler. This tool I am recommending is for advanced users only so please ignore this recommendation if you are a newbie:

    Download ShellExView portable from Nirsoft.

ShellExView - Shell Extension Manager For Windows

Extract the contents of the zip file and run the executable. Once your information pops up on the screen, sort that information by "Type." Now, concentrate only on the following entries:

Entries that are labeled as Context Menu and are highlighted in pink (user added entries)

Try disabling those entries and see if that fixes your issue. If so, try enabling them, one at a time, until your problem returns. The same thing can be done via sysintenals autoruns program but this tool makes it easier to identify the entries IMHO.

Again, this tool is not for newbies. Good luck.

If you have the Aperture Circle spinning forever on a right-click, then it is possible your hard drive has developed a read error. How about Programs, do your programs run? And how long does it take your system to boot up, does it seem to take longer than usual?

A spinning aperture circle is a sign of read Element Failure on a mechanical hard drive. You can use GWscan to check it. It's on Hiren's Boot CD which can be downloaded from the link below my sig pic. It's in Dos Programs under Hard Disk Tools.

It would not hurt to do a Smart Check and then a quick surface test, if you have read Element Failure, it will allow you to fix it.

Thanks, I'll give both a go. The issue is it happens randomly - I can use the computer for hours with no issue, and other times it will happen within mins of bootup.

    - you may be on to something there. I have an SSD for my bootdrive and a normal HDD for all my files. I'll have a go at
ShellExView when it happens again, but also start taking note if I was trying to access my SSD for HDD at the time.

Again, apologies to Alta, not trying to hijack your thread here mate - would love to hear if your symptoms are exactly the same and if these answers worked.

SSD drive, ok, is there a disk testing program made by the manufacturer of that drive? That's what you would need to test it, I doubt if GWscan can scan SSD drives, it's for mechanical drives.

You could download the trial for Raxco Perfect Disk, it can check SSD drives, it's an optimizer for hard drives, made specifically to handle SSD drives.

Good for you! And Windows 8 does shave a bunch of automatic repair tools that run, hopefully one of them came on line and worked right.
