Scrambled Screen After Hibernation

I have been having a frustrating problem every time I awaken my computer from sleep mode. When the screen powers on, it is scrambled. One thing I have figured out, is if I fold the screen back down and then reawaken my computer, the screen appears fine. However this is not normal, nor should it consistently occur. I do not want to do any type of reset or partial reset as I have done that already which only temporarily solves the problem (and I lost all my desktop personalization).

Is anybody else having this issue? How do I fix this?

I am running Windows 8 on a Toshiba Satellite L875. My computer is four months old. I have never dropped/banged/etc the computer. There has been no water, temperature, or any other type of external damage. My anti-virus software (Kaspersky) tells me my computer is clean. I have downloaded all of the updates for my computer.

Food for thought:

How much RAM do you have installed?
How big is your hiberfil.sys?
Does your computer return to the lock screen after hibernation?
Do you have a custom image set that may be extremely large?

Note: My first two questions have some technical merit. The last two are just stabs in the dark. Good luck.

I will try to get a pic uploaded as soon as possible.

My computer has an i7 processor and 8G of RAM.
Not sure, and not sure what that means.
My computer is password protected so it does return to the lock screen after hibernation.
I do have a custom image, not sure of the size. I copied the current lock screen pic from the Bing search app one day.

I also did not mention that I have logged on without unscrambling the screen, and it took me to my desktop which remained scrambled so it is not just the lock screen. It appears to me, to be some type of loading error after hibernating.

Maybe something is fouling up your Hiberfile.sys file. You say you've been keeping the newest drivers loaded? How if you rolled back your Video Driver to the earlier one, I know that Nvidia Beta drivers don't work so well with Windows 8. and they just released a new Beta Driver.

I have no idea what a hiberfile.sys file is? I also do not know how to roll back my drivers? Sorry for sounding like a pain!

Hiberfile is a file in your root folder, you will have to change your Folder View settings to see it, by "show hidden windows and system files" Then just delete it, and reboot, try Hibernation again.

As far as the Drivers, you right click on "My/This Computer" and choose "Manager" and scroll down to Device Manager, locate your Display device and check the make and version, if it is an Nvidia Beta driver, it may be causing you problems, You can always roll it back to the previous driver, and see if that clears up your problem.

Thanks, I will give it a shot, this weekend. Ever since I posted this inquiry, the problem hasn't presented itself, which is just as frustrating as when it does present itself. What is the likelihood that I may erroneously further screw up my computer in the process?

Well, deleting Hiberfile should not hurt your system. Actually, if you downloaded Hiren's Boot CD, and booted to it to "Mini-XP" you could browse to your System Drive using the Explorer in that system, and you can safely delete both your "Hiberfil" and "Pagefile" .sys files. There is a swapfile.sys as well, but I've been leaving that one alone. While you are in there, you can safely run a quick CHKDSK, there is a link in the Program Menu that pulls up CHKDSK and it's already set to do a quick check, juts type your system drive letter and hit enter, it will scan your drive and tell you if there are any errors. I'd do that if the problem presents itself again, but if it is not doing it now, then just leave it alone until it does it again.

Okay so my problem is back now and I can't figure out why it's still happening. Is this perhaps a manufacturer's defect?

If you have a lot of fragmentation, just recreating a deleted swapfile or hiberfile may not totally defragment them.
I am not saying that this will cause scrambled screens, but it is worth eliminating.

8GB RAM effectively means an 8GB Pagefile and an 8GB hiberfil.sys, minus a little, so, they are pretty big files, and when deleted, leave a big gap, or many gaps if they are much fragmented in the first place.

In its wisdom, the design team for Windows 8 has placed this file, and the pagefile and the metro swapfile in the same partition as all the other files that make up the operating system, as well as third party programs and user data. User data can often consist of multigigabyte system image backups, DVD iso downloads for OS installs or Movies. Another source of large data files are the hidden journal files that the NTFS maintains. There is another set of 4x2GB binary files in windows\system32\networklist\icons\. Big files often become impossible to fragment fully and can become almost inextricably entwined.

Why Windows does not have a dedicated swap partition is a mystery to me.

On the surface, Windows 8 does an excellent job of keeping files defragmented in the background, but if rarely rebooted, as it seems to be designed to be, 30% fragmentation is common.

The fragmented swapfiles etc need to be defragmented when not in use - just after booting, before the system loads at startup. A third party tool like Puran Utilities can be set to defragment at boot time, with options to defragment the registry too.

Fragmented File system journal hidden files may be removed with from the elevated cmd fsutil usn deletejournal /D c:

One benefit of a dual-boot setup, is that the other OS may be defragmented while it is shut down. The benefit is mutual to both systems.

It could be a hinge problem. Is there anything on the internet that would indicate that this problem is common with this model?

I did wonder (in my very first post on this Forum!) whether you could use the Contig utility from Microsoft Sysinternals to do this.

http://www.eightforums.com/performa...nting-pagefile-using-sysinternals-contig.html

The Contig utility defragments individual named files.

You need to download it first, then go to Advanced Startup, go into a command line, and run Contig on the individual files Pagefile.sys etc.

If nothing else, you can use contig with the "-a" switch to analyse how fragmented the files are.

Do you think this would work?

I've only tried it once, and I think the pagefile was already in one fragment so I'm not sure it really proved anything.

Can you take a pic of this happening with a hand held device or something? Let me see exactly what it looks like.
I think this is a sensible suggestion. I would also consider contacting Toshiba and showing them the photo to see if they can give some support, as it may be a hardware fault?

Does not seem to be a big problem online. A few things come up under different operating systems, but not much for Windows 8.
