    File transfer

I have a vista (sp2) 32bit PC & need to transfer the contents to a new Win 8 64 bit laptop.

No cd/dvd drive on the pc (or 1 that works).

What is the easiest & dummy proof way to do this?

    Thanks in advance.

    Basically everything on the HDD.
Files, pictures, music, docs etc etc.

Programs I will need to redownload install, I believe.
The laptop is replacing the pc which will be used for emergencies only.

    Thanks for the quick reply.

Does the PC have a USB port?
If so you could get a large usb drive & transfer stuff that way.

Someone else may chip in with a better idea....

A 16 GB usb drive would probably be adequate.

Then, after transferring everything you could use it to make a backup of the laptop.
On my PC it said in the backup wizard to insert a usb drive that holds at least 16 GB's.
It worked with space to spare.

    EDIT--A PICTURE---

Apparently, hoprfully, according to ms answer desk this works Download Windows Easy Transfer for transferring from Windows Vista (32 bit) to Windows 7 from Official Microsoft Download Center

Am I allowed to say, they instill little or no confidence.

Thanks for your help David, I will try the ms way & failing that I will get the thumb drives cranked up. 283 GB to move

I think I might just set up a workgroup between those two machines then you can move all the files you want, but maybe that is too simple?

If you can download Hiren's Boot CD, you can make a bootable USB with it. Then you can use Mini-XP which is part of Hiren's to copy files over, using Teracopy which is the default copy program, or, regular Explorer.
