I have a vista (sp2) 32bit PC & need to transfer the contents to a new Win 8 64 bit laptop.

No cd/dvd drive on the pc (or 1 that works).

What is the easiest & dummy proof way to do this?

Thanks in advance.

Does the PC have a USB port?
If so you could get a large usb drive & transfer stuff that way.

Someone else may chip in with a better idea....

It has usb ports.
I was hoping to go the path of least expense :)

A 16 GB usb drive would probably be adequate.

Then, after transferring everything you could use it to make a backup of the laptop.
On my PC it said in the backup wizard to insert a usb drive that holds at least 16 GB's.
It worked with space to spare.

I think I might just set up a workgroup between those two machines then you can move all the files you want, but maybe that is too simple?

If you can download Hiren's Boot CD, you can make a bootable USB with it. Then you can use Mini-XP which is part of Hiren's to copy files over, using Teracopy which is the default copy program, or, regular Explorer.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.

That is the ideal way but the laptop ( Toshiba ) will not join the Workgroup, only Homegroup.
I will try the ms way then spend a few hours fiddling with the laptop. May even have to give it a beer or three :)
Failing all this I will try Hiren's way.

Thanks for the assistance folks.

Well, you have to have each machine in an MS network, have Administrator turned on and passworded. I always use the same PW on each machine.

So, what you do then, even if the machine you want to connect to is not shown in Windows 8? You go into map network dive and type "//name-pc( your PCs name)/x" where x -= the drive you want. Then a dialogue box pops up asking for user name/pw. Type in "administrator" for name and 12345 or whatever you set for admin password.

In my case, I have all of the names of my PCs memorised. This one is "Asus-pc", my media pc is "Windows8-pc", my Pro Tools is "Digi-pc" and my G5 Virtual HD is "Mac-pc"

That way I don't need to see a network map, Windows 8 has NO network map.

I had no problem transferring all my stuff from my old XP laptop to my Win8 notebook. I downloaded the Windows Easy Transfer to both units & since both were on the same broadband it was easy. I think I used a flash drive for a couple of items. Try it!

    Touchscreen,
Cashcow, I bet you run in to problems transferring your email 'Contacts'. It seems many do. Trying to get a sync between 'Contacts' & 'People' is a real bugbear. I had to enter all my email addresses into People individually. I don't know if MS have remedied this problem yet! Anyway good luck with your transfer.

    Touchscreen,
Yah, a Windows Easy Transfer will work between two versions of the same OS, but I tried it between Windows 7 and Windows 8 and it failed. But my original easy transfer backup file was over 300 GB spanning 4 drives, much more comprehensive than I intended. So a modest easy file backup should work fine, But I would test it somehow before wiping any source drive.
