    Portable Applications Large Folder Backup

    hello.
i love portable .paf apps and pretty much download all i can find that i "might" use one day. every time i try to enter the folder i keep them in, explorer goes into the not responding state like it is
indexing all the files, or scanning them for some reason. i have defender off, do not use any software based firewall or any real time antivirus scanner at all. the process to enter the folder takes over a minute and every time i restart my system the same thing happens again. as long as i dont shut down then it is instantly accessible like all other folders on all my other hdds including the same hdd that the folder is on. it only seems to happen with the .paf files.

the folder is only 409 files at slightly over 5gb.

    any suggestions?

    thanks

It might do that once, but it should not be doing it every single time. You don't have to keep it in the Program Files folder, you can put it anywhere. I keep my portable apps in a folder off my C drive made for them, it never does this.

Maybe the particular portable app has to do some process that makes them all ready to run, and it has to do that once per each windows session? If so you should add the app to your startup so it gets that out of the way on boot, but it will hold up your boot process.

If I knew what app it was, if you do not want to say you can PM me.

the files and folder in question is just a location for storage. none of the portable apps are installed. the hdd is the same 2gb backup drive that i have had when i had win7 installed and win7 didnt have a problem with the folder.

i found the cause. there are two settings for defender. real time protection and administrative protection. when administrative protection is active every file that is accessed is still starting up the antimalware service and scanning the location even when real time protection is disabled. why on other folders that are bigger and have more files in them do not take enough time to scan that i only noticed it on the portable apps location is a mystery to me.

Ah ha! Well, you have actually added to our knowledge base, good job for your first posts here!

I have Defender running in my 2nd machine, And I do run a few portable apps on that system, I'll make sure that's shut off. I've never seen that setting though, I'll look for it.

win8 has so many new security measures for local accounts that it feels like ms thinks most people want this stuff. just to install drivers and especially beta drivers it can be tricky. how many people are going to research how to
disable some of the account policies to be able to even moderate their own systems.....win8 has really hurt the pc market.
anyway just to clarify for anyone that might have a problem or wondering why the defender services are still running after real time protection was turned off.

All you have to do really is move the UAC slider all the way to the bottom. But you can't shut it off, it will foul up the system, I tried. By OFF I don't mean, slid to the bottom, but disabled, like we have been able to do with Vista-7. I use Yamicsoft Windows 7 and Vista Managers to do this.

actually there is a couple other steps needed to get full administrative privileges with an ability to modify system files and install unsigned drivers. i keep uac completely off. all doing so does is stop the metro apps from working which is an improvement from that trash. i boot to desktop anyway and never see metro.

Ok, I've looked all through Defender and found no "Administrative Protection" - But I did see, "scan within archives" - I always shut that off. I have my real time protection turned on on my Media PC, and I have about four portable apps I use. None of them are scanned for a long time on first run. Where is this "Administrative Protection"?

It looks to me, like you have just shut off regular "Real Time Protection" and it solved it - Cos the RTP was probably scanning ALL of the archives that may be within the portable app.
