    Updating Win 8.0

New (out of the box last week) Dell laptop preloaded with Win 8.0

Laptop belongs to my 40-ish daughter for her business.
She freaked at Win 8.0 and wants an XP style UI
(I had to change the battery in my pace maker too)

I have installed Classic Shell Start (and Classic Explorer) on several of my Win7 PC, while three of my XP beasts soldier on. All "corporate" tools.

Over the decades many windows updates have been cosmetic and in some instances sabotaged settings.
Granted some security updates are a good idea.

How can I determine what version of updating is on the Dell ?
12 months ago I disabled Windows updates on Win7, because updates were destroying some of my settings. No problems, to date)

Noises on the net are that 8.0 was a hurried release so I am aware that there will be some necessary fixes (MS call them updates ).
Now with 8.1 release and noises of Win9 I cannot see the point of allowing MS to down load a lot of crap onto any PC, unnecessarily.

Failing to install updates not only hurts you, but hurts others as well. There are many attackers that take over machines quietly, and you will never know they have have turned your computer into a spam zombie. Many of those "problems" you blame on Microsoft are likely because you have been infected with something. Anti-virus and malware can't help if it's a rootkit because rootkits can hide from everything, even device drivers. You are likely quietly part of the problem of spam on the internet, and costing all of us a lot of money on our internet bills.

I know, I know, you know what you're doing.. your computer is fine.. blah blah blah.. it's all just a scam... I have no idea how people can be this... willfully oblivious to the realities of how nasty the internet really is, and just how important it is to keep your computer updated.

    Hello,

I'm not quite sure what you are looking for but Windows 8 is still just Windows 8 because no service packs have been issued; however, if you are looking for a version (Windows 8, Windows 8 Pro, etc) you can go to Control Panel > System and view that information.

Update: If you want to know which Windows Updates have been applied, go to add/remove programs and view installed updates there.

You appear to have the version (bottom of your post).
I understand we are talking about Window 8. You wont find add/remove programs anywhere, to my knowledge. But "How can I determine what version of updating is on the Dell " - you mean updates?

Open the control panel- Windows update, and, on the left panel, "View update history"

OK Dave. Thanks for correcting that error. I did mean Uninstall Programs but I just finished talking about XP in another thread.
