Here is an example from Stephen Colbert at a security conference:

"We can trust the NSA because without a doubt it is history's most powerful, pervasive, sophisticated surveillance agency with an unlimited budget ever to be totally pwned by a 29-year-old with a thumb drive," said Colbert.

    Urban Dictionary: pwned

I was in fact playing. There has been so much effort expended and still this is a completely illusive problem. You can wack at it only for it to return a few days later. We all hope for a universal fix but there are so many unique variables that its truly a daunting problem.

I didn't mean to be offensive, just trying to make light.

I have been manually sleeping my computers for quite a while now and that is a good workaround (change the power button to cause sleep for me). Remember too that this is a LIMITED issue for ONLY SOME unlucky users so don't give up on Win8 just yet...
Thanks. I looked at that post and made a few changes based on it.

You have many posts where you say a December patch fixed your issue. Are you saying now it did not?

Well, I decided to have another go at a MS login with Onedrive re-enabled to see if it had anything to offer (it was disabled weeks ago). This immediately gave me sleep problems. I saw a wakeup a couple of minutes after manual sleep. The comp was also awake in the morning. Did some more testing with 1 min sleep set and it didn't want to sleep.

So, I unplugged the ethernet cable and guess what? Yes, it would go into sleep mode after 28 sec as it was doing before these mods. I re-connected the cable and it misbehaved again.

I disabled Onedrive in group policy and it still gave sleep problems. After a reboot it was giving sleep delays of 2-3 min.

I reverted to a local login and the sleep patterns went back to "normal', i.e. sleeps after 28 sec.

So, I have to say that, for my machine at least, the 8.1.1 update hasn't helped one iota. I do have sleep problems if running my machine as MS wants us to.

May be interesting if those having probs could say whether they are using an MS login and/or have Onedrive enabled.

    johnpombrio,

Is your machine still sleeping after update 1? Does it sleep after maintenance?

For my part, since I joined this discussion, I never been to a MS account and my computer sleeps just fine under 10 seconds. I installed windows offline to be sure their online garbage didn't turn on by default. The problem is they didn't care to update the power management to suit the new Windows and because of that, we don't see anything in the even log when the random sleep problem occur.

There is nothing we can do about it. Just pray that the next Windows won't be like that. Windows 8.1 is another Vista. Period.

Lin, I DO have MS account enabled and DO have OneDrive running and I have no sleep issues.
NC, Still doing fine. I donno what maintenance you are talking about but all updates are done.
Remember tho that I pretty much had sleep fixed back in Dec with a MS update so this is kinda hard to tell if anything really changed for me since Win8.1.1. Sorry.

Orbit, AGAIN remember that only a FEW people are having troubles with sleep under Win8.1. This is not a wide issue and certainly is no reason to condemn all Win8 users or the operating system.

OK, John. Pretty weird how systems can be different.

The Power service is really strange on my system. I am really puzzled how disabling it makes my sleep system much more reliable and logical. One of the notable changes is that with Power disabled, video clips don't get shutdown. A 2 hour YT vid in a window played right through and after it finished, the comp went to sleep after 1 min 23 sec.

Hard to know what the programmers had in mind when they implemented that "service".

I was actually referring to the daily maintenance that Microsoft runs at night as a scheduled task. Mine is sleeping pretty well now after a reboot but is always wide awake in the morning due to the overnight scheduled maintenance task. Maintenance wakes the pc and it wont sleep again after that without a reboot.
