Download Update for Windows 8.1 (KB2919394) from Official Microsoft Download Center
tells me, "this update is not applicable to your system" or something close to that. I'm not seeing anything there mentioning x32. In fact, their system requirements section lists "Windows 8.1" and that's it...

I guess I'll just wait until update 8.1.1

Is your system x64? And possibly two to five years old? You may be one of those like myself whose older computer took 64 bit Windows 8, but when attempting to install Windows 8.1 from the "store" we're told the same thing you were.

If you drop back to Windows 8 x32, you should be successful in upgrading to Windows 8.1. Not a perfect solution, I know, but it's worth a try.

What happened is that Microsoft somehow changed the specs on us between Windows 8 and 8.1.

It is about 6 years old....wow....that's old.
    I am currently using 8.1

The update I'm referring to is an optional update HippsieGypsie said has helped some people with the no sleep issue.

When the details section is expanded on this page the file name is Windows8.1-KB2919394-x86.msu. x86 usually means for 32 bit, but it may literally mean the old 16 bit system, but I highly doubt MS supports 16 bit anymore. This is the page for this particular file: Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2 update rollup: February 2014

This is the page I found that link on. One is for Server, one for x64, and one for x86 although there it doesn’t state x86 on this page. KB2919394 - Search Microsoft.com

Not understanding > #1 Why it won’t download with your other updates. #2 Why the one I linked won’t install.

Anyone else here with a 32 bit system have this update listed in your updates?

    Windows 8.1

    Still mystified

My Windows 8.1 system will sleep automatically after a restart ... exactly 3 times. Once it resumes from sleep after that, it just will not sleep automatically anymore unless I do another restart. I can, of course, get it to sleep on demand but that's not the point.

Does anyone have a clue what could account for this behavior? I've tried just about everything suggested on this forum.

So, I don't have any issues with the system waking up unexpectedly, just the problem described above. I've tried disabling some scheduled tasks, but this behavior is independent of time of day so it probably has nothing to do with scheduled tasks.

Of course I'm hopeful that Windows 8.1 Update 1 will fix the problem but I'm doubtful. I'll wait for it to show up via Automatic Updates.

    Add me to the list.

My new laptop, updated to 8.1 upon purchase, acts inconsistently regarding sleep. When its on battery it seems to go to sleep with no issue. If its plugged in it will not.

Then I noticed my Win 7 desktop which is on the same network but not connected via homegroup to the laptop (haven't gotten around to it) will not sleep if the laptop is awake...but only when the laptop is awake on plug in. Following this? Its convoluted to say the least.

Based on the posts I've found while googling its obvious there is an issue with Win 8.1 and sleep mode. I am not going to futz around with settings, etc. Most of the time it does more harm than good. Luckily my laptop seems to go to sleep manually and stays that way. At least for now.

My dislike for Win 8.1 grows daily.

edit: After typing this on my desktop I looked over and lo and behold the Win 8.1 laptop, while plugged in, is blissfully asleep. I had manually put the Win 7 desktop to sleep prior but woke it up. I bet that had something to do with it. Started reading through all the posts about this. For-get-it. Its an issue I'll hopefully work around.

I have Windows 8.1 pro,wMC.My computer sleeps as it should.

I belong to One Drive & Home group.

I'm not engaging in a redneck ego trip.
    I'm not a redneck.

I have the same OS of those whose computers won't sleep.
Why does mine sleep & theirs don't ?

    David, NCGuy pwned you!
Ah, probably the greatest debate going though this MASSIVE post. Why me, Lord, why me? I have three computers in the house that run Win8.1 and only one of them had a sleep problem that occurred exactly when I upgraded to Win8.1, the other two were fine after the update. Now it is sleeping for me OK after another MS update. After all the work we went through to isolate and troubleshoot is that MS changed something in Win8 in the update that broke the sleep and it will be up to MS to fix it. Some people have their own workarounds which unfortunately usually breaks a part of windows.

Hi bru, my advice is to verify that the normal issues that prevent sleep have been addressed (post 168 page 17). If these are set properly, then I would wait for an update from MS rather than thrash about. I have been manually sleeping my computers for quite a while now and that is a good workaround (change the power button to cause sleep for me). Remember too that this is a LIMITED issue for ONLY SOME unlucky users so don't give up on Win8 just yet...
