Well, technically it goes to sleep but wakes up 16 seconds later. For me it appears to be the Intel USB 3.0 Extensible Host Controller driver from Microsoft. This is an Intel device that is not supported by Intel drivers under windows 8.1.

So I have just disabled USB 3 in my bios and will report back if it makes a difference. I just wanted others to have another thing to look at in their device manager. If you have the device I mention it is probably contributing to your lack of sleep.
    ewtaylo,

I have a Lenovo K430 with 2 USB3 ports on the front top of the box.
My device manager USB controllers reports I have a "Intel(R) USB3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 0100 (Microsoft)"
The driver tab reports the driver provider is Microsoft 1/7/2014 Version 6.3.9600.16506
    Driver files are c:\windows]system32\drivers\ucx01000.sys & usbxhci.sys

Presently, I don't have anything hooked up to the usb3 ports but did have an external backup drive hooked up some time ago. I don't recall if I had it hooked up when I started having sleep problems.

Hope the above system report might help you in some way.

    PS,

I have USB3 enabled and the computer sleeps for me.

As I recently reported, my lack of sleep appeared to be my "Intel(R) USB3.0 eXtensible Host Controller - 0100 (Microsoft)" driver. I used the bios and turned off USB 3 support.

The next morning I used the event viewer and saw that now my computer was not sleeping because of the network card. In the device manager for the card I made it wake the computer only if the "Magic Packet" was sent.

Now my computer sleeps as expected.

So anyone having sleep issues under 8.1 that has the same USB 3 device as I do (even if you have nothing plugged into it, because when I was having issues there were no USB 3 devices plugged in) I would disable USB 3 in the bios and see if that fixes your sleep issue.

No can do . . . I have a USB 3.0 external drive that I save all my data to. I'll just have to stay with Windows 8.0 until Microsoft comes up with a fix.

I agree. Having to disable USB 3 just to get the machine to sleep? That is HORRIBLE!! So you can either sleep or have USB 3 support, but not both. You have done the correct thing by holding at windows 8.

Lucky for me this is an HTPC with nothing plugged into USB 3. My keyboard and RC6 receiver are plugged into USB2 and still work just fine.

I will try to update the thread when Microsoft releases driver fixes.

While Update 1 isn't coming now to home users until the April patch Tuesday, the RTM is floating around now. I'm real curious to see what it does for this issue. Hopefully someone here will get their hands on it.

Just downloaded and installed the accidentally released April 8th RTM Win8.1.1 update. 700MB, 20 minutes to install the 6 updates (the 55 update takes a WHILE to install, the others are faster). They need to be installed in this order:

    Windows8.1-KB2919442-x64.msu
    Windows8.1-KB2939087-x64.msu
    Windows8.1-KB2919355-x64.msu
    Windows8.1-KB2932046-x64.msu
    Windows8.1-KB2938439-x64.msu
    Windows8.1-KB2937592-x64.msu

Frankly, it is a trivial update to install and did not seem to break anything or change much on the desktop. About the only thing that I noticed changed was that the Windows Store was pinned to the taskbar. I sure there are others but nothing obvious yet. No worries, mate.

So, sleep works with the update. With a 1 minute sleep, it takes 27 seconds for the computer to sleep once the screen blanks.

Will it fix the sleep issue for the rest of you? Gawd, I hope so!

Thanks for doing that! For me, the true test will be whether it sleeps after maintenance and of course continues to behave for days beyond the update.

If I recall there is a bunch of support for modern apps for desktop users. I don't personally use any modern apps except skydrive maintenance on occasion. I think you should be able to do stuff like the following (from my memory)

pin modern apps to the taskbar

get standard close controls for modern apps

    preview modern apps

    Anyway, please keep us updated.

Updated mine as well. All went smoothly.

Background - my 8.1 was sleeping, just a bit erratic on the delay. I was also disappointed that video playing via IE11 didn't keep the comp awake for the duration of the vid.

OK, any change since the update? There are some variations in sleep delay but mainly 28 sec. But the video still gets interrupted by the sleep timer both for window and full screen playing. The time it decides to sleep is erratic like 6min, 1min45, 2min45 on a 1min time setting. So it sort of knows it should stay awake but then forgets at random time intervals!

As for other impressions, I am finding it hard to see any differences but I was running in desktop mode before and so notice little change. Maybe I will find some beneficial changes as I go on.

Interested to hear if the no-sleep people see any change.

Hope once again! I will report back as soon as I can install the update through Windows Update next month. Until then? Pins and needles...
