Windows 8.1 refuses to sleep

Okay, thanks for the help. I guess I could unplug my Ethernet cable every night, but that seems silly.

Windows Update says there are no pending updates. In update history there are some updates that failed, but the details of them are not anything that stops sleep. As I said before, I was never able to identify if there is a x32 version of the KB2919394 update.

Hi there again, cplindem. I've been keeping an eye on this. I didn't catch that your system is x32. Isn't this what you need?

Download Update for Windows 8.1 (KB2919394) from Official Microsoft Download Center

Heh, I am back. Sooo, ONCE AGAIN my computer will not sleep. It worked for almost two months before it stopped again last week. Did the usual, checked the usual, tried the hidden network adapter disables, no dice.
The good news is that I am so used to hitting the power button to sleep the computer when I leave my computer now that I don't really even care anymore.

OK, I'll have another go at this. Let me ask a question and have you try something.

For those that have done the updates and can't get your system to sleep, do you have other computers on your network?

    1. Unplugging the cable at the computer allows it to sleep (many reported this). If so, does unplugging and/or turning off all other computers and other wireless devices on the network permit sleep?
    2. If you have a wireless router, does disabling the wireless have any effect?
    3. Does unplugging the cable between your router to the internet have any effect on sleeping?

And as a last question, what antivirus and firewall do you use?

Ken, Since "unplugging" is a wired network adapter, wireless does not play into this. I have had both a wired and wireless router running my network and when I changed over a month or so ago, my sleep was still working. As for unplugging to the internet, no that does not fix the issue, nor does having all the other things on the network turned off. It is simply either removing the network adapter or disabling the network adapter in device manager that will fix sleep.
forget about antivirus and firewall. We went through all that a long time ago (along with a million other things) but in case you still want to go and try it, Windows firewall and MS defender that comes with Win8.

The update did solve it for many it seems. I'm leaning more towards 3rd party AV, FW, or maintenance program that is in common.

Just a thought.. I can't imagine with all the recommendations given in this thread that people are still having issues. I plan to condense everything into a single post for people who need things to try. Hopefully tonight I will get to it.

Now, Now, John! Your help and input has kept us looking for the problem all this time, so don't quit on us now!

Seriously, I feel about the same . . . For now I'm hanging onto Windows 8 and don't have any real problems, so I'll wait awhile longer for Windows 8.1.

As to the stupid NumLock issue (NumLock has worked erratically on bootup in both Windows 8/8.1 installations. On the old almost obsolete hardware system, NumLock worked better than it does on this new HP Honker (not at all). HP Support tried to tell me NumLock is defaulted to OFF on startup for security reasons. I think not! Unless someone can prove me wrong, that is.

Since I turn my system(s) off at night and it's easy to hit the NumLock key on startup, I guess I'll just deal for now. It would be nice though, to save a little energy when walking away from the computer for a few hours during the day, since energy usage has been up during this exceptionally cold winter.

Are you sure? Nice of you to do so, but that will be quite an undertaking indeed. That's a lot of data to sift through. A lot!

If you do, may I suggest an Excel spread sheet with columns with member name, device type, Live or local account, network, AV, firewall, and > Oh man! > I could go on > A lot of variables! That's really has been the problem of solving this. A lot of variables.

When all is finished with that phase then find a common denominator.

Not saying it can't be done. Good luck!
