Ken, good find! Here is my network adapter list in device manager in comparison (ASUS Z87-Pro mobo using the Intel network and disabled the Realtek network adapter in UEFI Bios). Nothing like what you saw on your list.

    John,

Real nice MB you have there. See why you are a Power User! I am almost 3 days now with a system that sleeps.

I tried numerous other things, disabling task - shutting down startup items - killing running programs - pulling out hair, but none worked for more than a couple of hours. Wish I knew why removing unused devices fixed the problem for me. Well, if the problem comes back again, I sure know where to come for help.

I see you have Miniport (haven't run across that in a while) and PPP. Are you tied into a DSL modem and is the reason for PPP? Miniports can get a bit tricky to work on as I recall.

I tried doing a network bridge while back and don't know if that what started my problem. Funny thing is, most of us seem to have the problem show up about the same time. Either that, or we all found this thread about the same time.

Hey Ken, It was the 8.1 update that caused this sleep issue and started this monster post! If you look at the first post (First on the page numbers), it even mentions that removing the Ethernet cable fixed the issue. So we were all looking for ways to fix the issue via a network adapter update/fix/disable way.
Looking at your solution, I see that you may have disabled IPV 6 in some form or another. That fixed sleep for most of us but it also turned off Homegroup. Can you use Homegroup now or do you not use it on your computer?

One thing that you have done is to SHOW HIDDEN DEVICES on Device Manager. That is how you were able to see some of the devices that you were playing with. Here is my list with hidden devices turned on in Device Manager:

I don't really know why I have the WAN miniports on my machine and Googling it did not help much. Docsis 3 Cable modem but my mobo also supports using my computer as a wireless router so that might be why they are there. Don't really care as playing with them did not fix my sleep issue (a MS update in December did that).
If you want to see what people have in their computers, click on the My System Specs at the bottom of their post.

I have IP6 enabled on my Realtek network card.
I never setup homegroup as it doesn't work well with WHS2011.

I forgot that I ran into a sleep problem, several months back, with the audio recording input when I installed Audials One to record some old cassettes. Here are my notes:

    Audio keeping computer from sleeping:
Audio channel, Realtek, is open and keeping from sleep.
Go to control panel, sound, recording tab and uncheck line-input from recording device.

I don't really know why I have the WAN miniports on my machine and Googling it did not help much. Docsis 3 Cable modem
I had a Docsis 3 Motorola wireless cable modem that I used with Comcast about 3 years ago. That might be where I ran into the Wan miniports.

a MS update in December did that
Glad to hear that but my problem started after the Dec fix.

It's been stated here and elsewhere that 8.1 may have a bug with regards to networking issues which prevents PC's from sleeping. And that the best way to fix it is to have all systems leave the current Home Group and re-establish a new one with all computers on, and using the same password for all.

I've not re-established my home group yet, but I can say that since leaving home group Win 8.1 now sleeps without issue.

You can see these posts... Windows 8.1 Won't Sleep When Idle - Page 2 - Microsoft (Windows) Discussion & Support - Neowin Forums to get an idea what I'm talking about, including one by our very own johnpombrio - Windows 8.1 does not go to sleep / standby automatically. Please read the thread though as some steps may be unnecessary or even work. BUT.... if your PC sleeps when disconnected from the network, it's definitely a network problem.

    Good luck.
So after having my sleep issues fixed by leaving home group, I finally re-joined this week... and the sleep issues are still gone. In short... my issue is fixed, even with home group.

May not work for everyone, but just a thought.

    Peace

Well my machine slept fine for about 3 days. Now if it has slept once and woken it refuses to sleep again

Although this time a reboot will induce sleep again whereas before the MS update it wouldn't.
