Windows 8.1 refuses to sleep

  1. #761

Wow, an update mentioning sleep issues! Didn't get too excited, though, as I have become too accustomed to disappointment.

Sure enough, no changes noticed here (PC cabled to network). Maybe it is just a wireless issue, as it says.

I am getting resigned to having to set screen turn off to never (not really an issue), and sleep time to longer than most YT vids. This will take care of YT watching, by and large.

As an aside, I have checked a Vista and XP system here and both stay awake past the sleep timer cutoff if a YT vid is playing. Why on earth would this be different for 8.1??

On another comment re sleep problems not being major news, I would hazard that MANY people don't notice as they turn their comps off after using them. At least most of the people I know do.

    Cheers.

Turning off will work but forcing sleep only works until maintenance kicks in. Then, like magic, its wide awake again.

One idea straight away is Start screen tiles, especially 3rd party developers'.

Has anyone with the issue deleted all 3rd party ones as a test? (Just a question. I didn't review all 39 pages.)

I have the problem and I never installed any modern apps, if those are the tiles you're referring to. I may not ever install any.

I think the sleep update resolves the homegroup sleep issue, witch was already there before Win 8.1. I'm not sure if it resolves the "random" sleep issue (no kernel-power or powertroubleshooter in the system event log).

Active tiles would tend to keep the comp awake wouldn't they? My quibble is that the comp sleeps when there is video and audio activity.

Earlier, when trying to stop erratic sleep behaviour, I turned off all the active tiles I could find with no effect. But win 8 had active tiles and it had no sleep issues with me.

Active tiles don't prevent the PC from going to sleep. But modern apps that show up in the apps list of Task Manager sometimes do.

The few times my PC didn't go to sleep in the past few weeks, was when I hadn't closed all my Modern Apps properly.

And about Youtube movies. The power management only put my screen to sleep, when the Youtube movie isn't playing full screen. When it is displayed full screen, the screen and PC stays active.

I must confirm the latest update did not resolve the insomnia issue. Only way to get the PC to sleep by itself is still to restart it or log off and on again - after that, it works for a while, until it doesn't. I never was able to pin down the cause, why it works at first and then stops after a certain time.

In the meantime, here's some humor Gates Spends Entire First Day Back in Office Trying to Install Windows 8.1 : The New Yorker to give us some comfort.

@Rudy. Mine sleeps even when YT clips are full screen. This is the frustrating thing - different performance with different machines.

@Steve - had to smile at that. But wait till he wants stable and predictable sleep performance!!!

Masterchief, Me and someone else (Rockhound maybe) went down the Start menu apps rabbithole as the cause for no sleep. I think there was one program in particular that we suspected but uninstalling it (and bunch of others) did not make any difference. If someone wants to try fooling with them, I expect that it will not make a difference.
