Windows 8.1 refuses to sleep

  1. #411

We're running out of options! I still think that it's related to the DCOM errors 10010 we have since Win 8.1. Since I've disabled SDrive, I don't have any but maybe other metro apps could do the same 10010 error.

I saw a HUGE difference between win 8.1 store update and fresh install. That's all I got for now. MSFT should have given the ISO of 8.1 it sucks doing it from the store. It's time and bandwidth consuming.

Pretty depressing if we all have different problems as opposed to the one magic bullet.

In my case it is pretty clear that the Power svc is stuffing it up but it could be one, or several other things it interacts with, that are the real problem.

But it is fundamental that the power requests are being ignored during YT playbacks. Some MS techo must have some idea of what to look for there.

@orbit. I have two of those DCOM errors as well. Looking at the registry, they both point to skydrive.exe. Mind you, DCOM errors are not that uncommon and usually don't mean anything. But, certainly, these are very persistent in my system log.

If you still have 10010 errors it means that a portion of Skydrive is still working. Last time my PC failed to sleep I've got those errors. Even just clicking on the Skydrive App to to be told it is deactivated is enough to generate them.

As soon as I closed the app in the task manager, my PC went to sleep and I even didn't need a reboot. since then my PC never failed to sleep once.

This is all I've got so far. I would like so much we solve this

    Yeah, that would be good.

Neither have I. I've read too many horror stories about registry cleaners acting more like "lye soap" and cleaning up way more than they were intended to.

I only use two or three of them and so far, they run fine on Lady Dual Boot.

Yes, and think of all the folks who only have dialup! I'm wondering how they will update. And the ones who are on metered intenet. Microsoft didn't make it easy to update. Can you imagine the poor soul on dialup wasting days and days updating only to find all the crap we're finding?

I had every one they put out from the get-go. I started out with the 4 kb one and went forward from there.

Mostly I used stuff someone else coded. I'm not a programmer. I belonged to the Tandy Color Computer Club for several years.

Yeah, if it could be "hung off the 'puter", I had it too. I hated to sell mine, but I needed the space.

Yeah, I think it IS back to Jail, do not pass go for me. I will be keeping an eye out for ANY Metro apps still alive in the Task Manger Background Processes in case that is the problem with sleep, but unlikely.

As for why Skydrive looked likely with the network adapter, I figured that my local Skydrive folder (and there is one on your computer) was failing to sync properly with my cloud version and would not let the computer sleep until it did. Made good sense but still...

As for the delay in sleeping that changes over time, I have NO IDEA. What could take longer after 10 sleeps than it did after 1 sleep? When I sleep the computer using my system control gadget button on my desktop, it snuffs the machine right out.

As for the REGISTRY (Rudy, had me stumped with register), indeed I watched things like my NewEgg App stop working as I added updates from MS and loading in other programs. One minute working, one minute not. SAME HARDWARE, SAME SETTINGS.

I tried an fresh install only to watch things stop working until I was back right where I am now. I wonder how long I can hold off MS forcing me to go from Win8.1 preview to the released version? I am sure it will sneak it in somehow, like that damn Silverlight and Bing Bar updates that keep popping up.

And YEP, two system event log 10010 server errors on my system event log. the usual server timeout.

EDIT 2013-12-28 This did not fix the problem. For me, a MS update on Dec 11th fixed it.

Continued testing with vimeo instead of YT. (power svc on). Screen blanked but audio still ran. Didn't want to sleep after video stopped. Essentially same result.

Tried playing music via WMP. Audio registered in powercfg /requests. No screen blanking and slept perfectly after the trigger.

So, looks like the audio is behaving as expected but not video/screen.

Wondered about the video driver. My PC video is integrated Intel HD graphics. Reverted back to an earlier driver but same result.

Perhaps coincidentally, my netbook with similar sleep problems has Intel HD graphics as well.

Can't draw any conclusions - just observations in case something clicks with someone else.

@ John. Yep, the real sleep snuff out or slam dunk is obvious, eh. None of those will it, won't it, how long will it take this time exercises cut it!!

Your video 'card' isn't an Intel HD perchance? (I know grasping at straws - not many straws left now!!).

I know there is a way to fix them by upgrading permissions to some registry keys.

For my part now I don't have any and my sleep works perfectly and under 7 sec as Lindsay said.

    Maybe this could help
