For a brighter note, Microsoft in The Netherlands contacted me through Facebook and asked me for my phone number so they could contact me about this problem. I send them a PM with some explanation about what we had discovered and the solution that seems to work for me, but not for everyone yet. I also gave them a link to this topic, so maybe they will check here first before they will contact me in person.

At last, someone at Microsoft is finally taking notice of this problem. Now we can only hope, their programmers will eventually find the error and fix it.
Rudy, I never fooled with anything but the hybrid sleep (turned it off) and Power Service (turned it off). I turned both back on before disabling SkyDrive.

Very good news about Microsoft being interested. So, now we have my tech at HP (hopefully) and someone from Microsoft interested. We'll take all the help we can get!
I have been talking with him for the past hour and I let him take control of my PC so he could reactivate SkyDrive and test the problems I had.

He was also a little puzzled, because his own system doesn't have the problem we are having.

I also showed him the App Photos. With SkyDrive deactivated, it works, with SkyDrive active, it crashes. Something else he hadn't seen before. And because he was on my system that I had installed with a clean ISO, it couldn't be something from any previous versions of Windows.

The next thing I have to look into, is connecting my Laptop to another network. Just to make sure it isn't a connection problem with the modem or setup of my ISP. But I also told them it wasn't only on my PC that this happened. I told him about others in the world with the same problems.

But now I'm wondering about something else I hadn't thought of until now. Do you guys also have a Windows Phone? And if so, have you SkyDrive on it and let you upload your phone your pictures to SkyDrive? I'm just asking this to make sure we don't forget anything while I keep on troubleshooting with this guy from the support desk. Every little detail is now under scrutiny.

Well, if we should find a resolution, you can count on me posting it here. And if it is a bug, then another department of Microsoft will need to take action.

I'm sure, with some time, we will eventually figure it out. It would be easier when the problem would be a little more widespread, I think.

Aha! I knew there was something familiar about you! I've been working with computers since around 1979-1980ish. My first one was a Color Computer too. I bought it for my daughter, but she abandoned it and I loved it. Like you I moved on up to a clone. Some time between 1980 and 1985, I built my first system at HAL-PC and haven't looked back since! This HP is my first store-bought besides HP laptops since then.
Did you have the grey one or the white one. Well, I had both of them, but just a little curious now.

I liked those Tandy computers, because it made me work because I had to code my own programs on it. Here in Europe, we almost couldn't find anything for it.

I even made myself a controller for it, so I could connect a floppy station to it. I hated working with those tapes in the beginning. Every time I needed one of my programs, I had to look for it.

Whew! I left an old e-mail from this post on my machine and did not read all these until now.

I too still have had NO SLEEP issues even with my Skydrive disabled. Skydrive has been as far neutralized as I can make it and yet, no joy. Keep to try different combos, AGAIN. I only have the usual things turned off as well as have all the group Policy Skydrive setting enabled.

I can have it sleep a dozen times in a row then not. My poor computer keeps getting poked every time I find it asleep "Don't hit me again Pa, I'll be good, I swear!" "You have been SCAMPERING again, son, and SCAMPERING keeps you awake! My belt will fix that!"

For the folks mystified, I have the exact same sleep settings now that I have had with the very first Win8.1 beta, then Win8.1 preview. It was not until I received the Win8.1 FINAL/release version that the sleeping sickness occurred.

One of my three computers sleeps fine, exact same settings. To be fair tho I usually sleep it manually with a button on my keyboard since it is in my bedroom.

I find that my computer sleeps well after a cold boot. It can work for DAYS and usually, the sleep function turns off the computer a lot faster at first then in subsequent sleeps.

Samsung magician for an SSD will wake the computer for some obscure reason then put it back to sleep 30 seconds later, wake, sleep, etc. Need to be removed from startup.

Some other point, but I forgot what it was... heh.

Me I HATE programming, always have. I learned that back in college. Fussy damn things, always needed to fix this or that and needing to do yet ANOTHER IBM punch card to make changes. I went the hardware route and fixed big and very expensive stuff!

    Thank you very much, John.

OK, that seals it . . . I'm turning SkyDrive back on and Power Service off on Lady Dual Boot.

Here on Lady StarFerret, I will leave Windows 8 running until I see a real improvement. I want to see her get her beauty rest, so she'll wake up fresh with NumLock enabled. So far, I only have one or two apps running, such as weather, solitaire, and maybe a couple more and they're not crashing when I use 'em on Lady Dual Boot.

I will continue to monitor this thread, though because I figure someone will eventually come up with the solution. And I want to be there to see it.

John, you describe how yours sleeps better after a boot. I have found this as well. When I was adding services clumps at a time I quite reliably found that after the reboot the first sleep would be 4 or 7 sec after trigger. After that, the delay would be 30 sec to 2m 30 sec or longer. I found, as a general rule, the more services I added the longer the delay. It started with a reasonably reliable 30 sec then, later, it extended to 2m 30s. What this reveals is a very good question. I can't even guess at what might cause that increasing delay.

In any event, delay greater than 7 sec is no reliable solution.

Can you try playing youtube clips to see if your comp sleeps during playback, like mine does, with the Power svc on?

On the question of skydrive, why would this show as a problem with the network card disabled or the cable disconnected?

Rudy, I ran subinacl last night and certainly don't expect problems but there is always the backup image! What a comfort that can be when butchering services etc to try to get an answer to the sleep problem! Nah, no problem, really.

My micro computer experience started with building them from boards that became available in the mid 70's! Windows? What the hell was that? Not even DOS. Just machine code!

Yep, I am also the goto person for family and friends as well. Keeps the brain busy, though.

Wonder what the MS guys think of my results with the sleep overriding YT playback with the Power svc on but works OK with that svc off? Similar results on two installations as well.

I have to confess, I'm also starting to doubt the solution we found. While it keeps on working for me, I suspect now that something more is going on. Because, I just re-imaged my PC with the freshly installed Windows 8.1 from the 16th, and my apps and sleep worked while SkyDrive was active.

I then made an Export from my register and then re-imaged my PC with the one I made today. With SkyDrive on, the App Photos didn't work and my PC didn't sleep. However, when I imported the register file I had made, my app suddenly worked and my PC went to sleep. OK, I couldn't use this as a solution, because other things broke by doing this.

But it shows me that over time, something went wrong with my register. Something must have been deleted or added that messes up my system. I even noticed that with this imported register, my SkyDrive also suddenly worked instantly with its updates to and from the server.

I'm really puzzled by all of this. The only thing I can think of, is going back to my freshly Windows 8.1 installation and start to add one program at a time, and letting the PC sleep and wake up for the rest of the day. And so on until I find the program that could be the cause. However, at the moment, I don't have the time to do this, so for now, I will need to go on with what I have today.

I can only tell that I'm starting to think it could be CCleaner cleaning the registry, or System Mechanic, which also cleans the registry.

I only find it very strange, that my main PC, with SkyDrive disabled, has been working perfect since. I haven't shut it down or rebooted it since I put in the fix.

However, if SkyDrive works with others, it can't be the real cause. If it was a bug, every single user should experience this problem like we do. Especially because we have so many different systems.

Good extra info, Rudy. We really need some tools to try to see differences between our systems.

I haven't run any registry 'cleaners' so mine is just the working win 8 with the store update to 8.1. (I hesitated to use 'upgrade' so chose update!).

I don't use the apps as I am still a desktop man! However, I did run the apps you had trouble with and mine were fine. I do like the photo app, especially.
