LOL, here is someone who didnt read this thread from the beginning.

On a positive note, killing skydrive seems to have done it for me too!!! Honestly MSFT is pathetic, the fact that it is a skydrive issue means it must be widespread. Sleep timer is a big deal, it's not some minor feature we can set aside. The fact that MSFT has been focusing on fixing other issues, some of which are probably far less critical, just shows how dysfunctional they have become. In the end we, the users beat them to it and honestly I wouldn't even bother telling them if it wasn't for the sake of other users because that just makes us beta testers for their half baked OS that we actually paid money for. MSFT should reimburse us every cent.
Sorry for the rant but I just had to get it out.
I must admit this issue on itself wasn't easy, but combined with the other 1000 about sleep, it becomes a monster. I would say anytime the PC has a chance to not fall asleep, it will!!

    So let's make a recap

    1) If sleep worked before win 8.1 but not after, then you are probably at the right thread BUT you really SHOULD verify the classic issues about sleep such drivers, srvnet, home network, BIOS, jumpers, etc. Here is a link but there are plenty others out there:

(iBoyd) pc narcolepsy (was made in 2010 but still relevant)

    2) If sleep wasn't working before win 8.1 then it will certainly won't work after. You MUST fix the classic issues before fixing skydrive or else it will not likely work.

Of course having a fresh install is the best to isolate the culprit then fix it.
If you are on a microsoft account, then disable parameters sync in the metro pc configuration

2 hardware need to be upgraded for me (windows installed an outdated driver)

    1) Logitech unifying receiver: you need setpoint from logitech and after, remove and put back again the unifying receiver. Before I updated this, my srceens opened by themselves at 5:00.

    2) Realtek pciE gigabit ethernet controller (downloaded from realtek, then remove and delete the wrong driver then run setup from Realtek you just dwnlded

The best is to check all your drivers before doing something else.

    That's it

    Cheers
Orbital, I always do clean installs when upgrading the OS. That is what I did with 8, which I purchased as an upgrade. Then came 8.1 preview which I could not install as a clean install. Same with the final version: the only option MSFT gave me was downloading from the store and updating the preview.
Do you know if and how I can obtain an iso?

I have the Windows 8.1 Pro 32/64bit ISO files downloaded in the method described on this forum. Just go to that Microsoft page, do a Windows 8 Pro install, stop it after 1% and then do the Windows 8.1 Pro download (After it is downloaded, you get the option to install it right away or make an ISO file or write it to USB. I made an ISO file and then wrote it to an USB stick by using 'Windows 7 USB DVD Download' program from Microsoft. You can still use this program to make a bootable USB drive from you ISOs.

The download you get is always in the same bit format as your installed OS. Lucky, I have the 64 on my main and the 32 on my laptop.

This method failed for me (unknown error) and you will need a key before the install: your win 8 key won't work.

Did you first start the Windows 8 download, and then after aborting it, the Windows 8.1 download?

If you go straight for the Windows 8.1, it doesn't work. I tried this also.

I'm not sure where I read this, but Microsoft is planning to put the ISOs online this month. If they keep their word, that is.

Would be a great idea!! I hope so.

For the unknown error, I've tried after but it seems that each time I opened the installator, it resume to the failure... But I guess I made the wrong click!

    Good night folks!

A little late, but I've now disabled SkyDrive on Lady Dual Boot. I also enabled "save to local PC because SkyDrive has been trying to hijack my stuff and I have my external hard drive for data. Which I will now back up on Box.

So...can anyone confirm sleep timer still works when logged through MSFT account and skydrive disabled?

Yes, that's scenario I am running under

    1) Skydrive disabled in Group policy (by enabling the bypass skydrive options)
    2) Skydrive scheduled tasks disabled (seemed to make that extra bit of difference)
    3) skydrive sync disabled via metro settings...

and I am running under a Microsoft account... and sleep is working (I have it set at 45 min)

    good luck
