Apparently, the basic version of windows 8 that came with my PC that I upgraded to 8.1 does not have the group policy editor. Any suggestions on a work around?

Yeah, you should try to find an ISO of win 8.1 then fresh install then enter your product key. Maybe it will be there... just make a backup image before so you could restore in case of a failure.

Here to make a image backup:

System Image - Create in Windows 8

But maybe There is no group policy in Win 8 non PRO... I'm only guessing right now.

As far as apps trying to use Skydrive, can the apps be uninstalled and reinstalled to let them know that Skydrive is not available? Which apps are involved with Skydrive?

Does it make a difference if the user logs into their Microsoft Live account on startup or if they are just using a local account?

I will start to do research on WHY Skydrive is continuing to poll or gather information, keeping the computer alive when the idle counter has already turned off the display.

If it happens you find a way to come back to MS account tell us! And GUYS YOU REALLY SHOULD DISABLE THE 2 SKYDRIVE SCHEDULED MAINTENANCE IN SCHEDULED TASKS!!

UPDATE: If you read all 3 options in the group policy, the two others, are about default save for files and to not sync Skydrive offline. I enabled all of them, it seems logical.

I also did an extra step over the group policy stuff

To do this I went to the Windows 8 Start Screen, mouse to the top right and moved pointer down to click settings. Then at the bottom of the popup, I clicked change pc settings.
I clicked on SKYDRIVE, and clicked SYNC SETTINGS. And where it said "Sync your settings
on this PC" at the top, I changed this to off. Which greyed out all the options below. These options were all about syncing appearance and browser type stuff, not actual files.

Because its skydrive related, there is no harm in disabling it as well.

    Cheers

Boulder, the Group policy probably has been disabled for the users as it is a very powerful command tool. Look for a tutorial here on how to log in as administrator. that should work.

Thanks Rob! I am going to try to see if sleep works if I just disable syncing instead of the whole Skydrive. We may be able to snyc it manually.

EDIT 2013-12-28 This did not fix the problem. For me, a MS update on Dec 11th fixed it.

Thank you John. I am logged on as an administrator. Group policy is available on Win 8.1 pro and enterprise and not on the home and basic version. For the versions below pro, Skydrive can be disabled in the registry by using the tool in this, https://www.eightforums.com/tutorials...e-disable.html, post.

Very interesting! After disabling Skydrive, I disabled all the sync settings in the Start/Metro PC Settings page and then tried two things. First I just put the computer to sleep with a one minute timer. It went to sleep ALMOST IMMEDIATELY! No more of this wait for five or more minutes before sleeping for me.

Before the computer goes to sleep, it looks like it tries to sync to Skydrive. If it cannot connect, it is possible that it just keeps trying and never lets the computer sleep. It MAY connect (or time out) but it takes a long time to do so, causing a long wait for the computer to sleep.

With sync disabled and Skydrive once again enabled, the computer would sleep (for how many times in a row, I do not know) but again would have a long wait. For me, a cold boot seems to make it able to sync more reliably so that is why it was so intermittent.

Ahhh, reliable sleep without the wait. Bliss!

EDIT: Crap! I started fooling with the OTHER Skydrive sync settings and now the computer is waiting to sleep again. Aggh! Wait!, some more futzing about and it is better. DOUBLE Agggh!

NOW I can afford to damn Microsoft for causing this whole mess by trying to force integrating Skydrive onto our computers to the point where it interferes with its basic operation.

EDIT 2013-12-28 This did not fix the problem. For me, a MS update on Dec 11th fixed it.
