Ok, I figured out how to do that. Still, when opening file explorer I still see the skydrive folder with its contents. When I invoke skydrive on metro, however, I get a message that my system admin has blocked the use of SkyDrive. So is this think switched off or what?
This is mysterious. In local mode recheck the Skydrive policy.

    Maybe this will help:

That's also what I have except on the left column under favorites, I have skydrive and maybe that is irrelevant!

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I was asleep until just an hour ago and I needed to test my new little helicopter first. (RC, not a real one. )

    After I do this:

    Attachment 31828

    I get this:

    Attachment 31827

The map SkyDrive is just gone with me.

I stood up this morning, and I saw my PC was asleep, after it had done its daily backup routine. So, it should work this way. If not, something else is fishy with your system.

As you can see in the picture. I still have four other Clouds running, and they don't keep my PC awake... and the files are updates almost instantly.

And yes, it's called file explorer. For some stupid reason, I always call it Windows Explorer.
You call it windows explorer because that is what it use to be called!
The only difference between mine and yours is that skydrive appears under favorites. I cant see it anywhere else so I am assuming it is switched off!

If I'm not mistaken, the old SkyDrive software that was used by Windows 8- placed the SkyDrive folder under Favorites. Just like the other Cloud programs does in my example.

Maybe it's a remnant that has stayed linked on your system? With my upgrade to 8.1, it had removed the old software and link in Favorites.

As long as you don't see, 'SkyDrive Sync Engine Host' among the Background processes in Task Manager, your SkyDrive should be disabled.

Aha, like Metro UI in the preview version and Modern UI in the official Windows 8. And I also have another problem. I need to know everything in Dutch and English when it concerns Windows. I always install the English version of Windows for myself, but the people around me prefer the Dutch version. It's sometimes funny when I need to explain something on the phone. Luckily, I have also installed XP, Vista and 7 in a VirtualBox in both languages. Its always easier to explain something if you also see it on your own screen.

Yes it's just a dead shorthcut... just delete it!

By the way, I enabled the 3 options in group policy to nuke skydrive completely. I put Box and Google Drive in windows explorer and it's amazing! Thanks to Rudy!!!

Great job everyone. Is this a valid summary?

    https://www.eightforums.com/tutorials...e-disable.html

    OR

In control panel, search for group policy:

Edit Group policy. Select - Local Computer Policy- Computer Configuration- Administrative Templates- Windows Components- Skydrive.

In the Skydrive folder, click on each of the three Skydrive Options and Enable them, click on Apply, and click on OK.

Finally, disable the SYNC setting in the Start Menu PC settings:

    Restart your computer.

EDIT 2013-12-28 This did not fix the problem. For me, a MS update on Dec 11th fixed it.

Is the consensus the same? No other changes other than disabling Skydrive and the changes on post 168 are necessary? Power service can be turned on? Srvnet can be ignored?

As far as apps trying to use Skydrive, can the apps be uninstalled and reinstalled to let them know that Skydrive is not available? Which apps are involved with Skydrive?

Does it make a difference if the user logs into their Microsoft Live account on startup or if they are just using a local account?

I will start to do research on WHY Skydrive is continuing to poll or gather information, keeping the computer alive when the idle counter has already turned off the display.

    Restart your computer.
You have to check 'Enabled' for the one that says, 'Prevent the usage of SkyDrive for file storage'.

If you check 'Disabled' or 'Not Configured', then SkyDrive is activated by Windows.

The other two, I left on 'Not Configured', but if you want to be thorough, you also need to check 'Enabled' with those two.

The first one will make sure that when you press 'Save As...' you go to a local folder and not the SkyDrive folder.
The third one will make sure that SkyDrive won't try to sync the files.

The most important word here is 'Prevent'. I find it somewhat stupid that Microsoft did it this way, but they probably will have their reasons for it.

The only thing I changed was enabling 'Prevent the usage of SkyDrive for file Storage'. All the other settings are back to their original settings.

My apps started working on their own the moment I enabled the above setting in Windows. I didn't need to reinstall them. But that won't say that all the apps you use will do this. I had only a problem with my Photos app. The few other apps, like weather, didn't have a problem on my system.

Because SkyDrive didn't sync my files to the server normally, I think the problem lay with a routine in the program that checks if there are any changes made in the folder. But instead of going to the routine that uploads the file, SkyDrive is stuck in checking the folder. Maybe, the moment it finds a new file, it sends a notice to the Power service, or one connected to it, that tells the PC to stay awake until the file is uploaded. But because the upload routine doesn't start, it doesn't get the signal that sleep can be activated again. (This all is just what I think that happens. Without the source code, it's difficult to know what goes on inside the software. )

Doh! I changed them to Enable. Thank you! I accidentally changed them while I was getting screenshots. I like having the first one enabled as my Word keeps wanting me to default to save to Skydrive and it drove me crazy. The last one just tries to keep your smartphone payments down but I turned it off (by ENABLING it, heh!)

I put in a question on the MS Skydrive site. Perhaps we will get an answer.

From the site: "Is the SkyDrive Sync Engine continues to run and doesn’t continue to crash. Go to Task Manager, ensure "Sky Drive Sync Engine Host" process is running."

Like I mentioned in a previous message. I'm sure Microsoft will fix this, because I have a feeling that the same bug that prevents instant updating the files to the server and to the other PC's is causing the sleep problem.

If you search the Internet, you will see that there are more people complaining about SkyDrive not syncing the files since updating to Windows 8.1.
