I just disabled Skydrive. The drive light chugged for the longest time but it finally went to sleep. Yes, there is still a big lag!

BTW, I am on Local Account and not logged into my MS Live account. That may make a difference, maybe, perhaps, I donno..

EDIT 2013-12-28 This did not fix the problem. For me, a MS update on Dec 11th fixed it.

When you enable non skydrive option in group policy and cold reboot it shouldn't show in files explorer, at least in local mode.

To John I think it's normal hybrid sleep is longer to sleep, but quicker to wake, compare to hibernate who is quicker to sleep but longer to wake (hypothesis)

    Have I got a tale to tell . . .

I got my HP computer back today, got everything hooked up and was ready to go through the setup routine again, but that didn't happen! NO!

The first thing I was told that the PC couldn't find a boot drive! But, but, but . . . wasn't that why I'd sent it in in the first place? The next sentence said check the cables, so I open the box and everything looks OK, but when I reach for the SATA power connector, the thing "crumbles" in my hands. Then, I think I'm getting separate wires that have fallen off when it crumbled. On getting all the wires pulled out, I find they're attached to a SATA power connector. But, what is that thing sticking out of the power connection on the hard drive? It looks funny and has shiny "teeth" so I pull it out of the drive. Hmmm, I then connect the SATA power connector to the drive and think OK, just a fluke . . . I did tip the box back and forth to be sure all the pieces of whatever that was that crumbled were out.

AHA! I got the piece that had come off and playing around with it and the other piece I'd pulled out of the hard drive, I found that what I probably have here is a "plug" to keep the power connection on the drive clean. The top of the "put together" thing says P3.

OK, so some idiot must not have known how to take that part off the drive and connect the real power to it! Duhhhhhhhhhh!

But my troubles weren't over! When the computer finally booted, I was told to activate, but first I had to plug in the product key. I tried to give it the original key, but it wouldn't take it! So, although I seldom get angry, I was mad as a hornet; I called HP, got told they don't have keys, given a number to call, so by the time I got to the guy in India he got the brunt of it for a bit, until I could make him understand what was happening. I gotta say that if I'd had to talk to me, I would have hung up, but he was ever the true professional and treated me better than I started out . . . he quickly defused me.

He walked me through the recovery process, which I could have done if I'd known that would fix it, but, well . . . who knew recovery would install the product key!

And now, after telling this saga, I come to the good part. As we talked while waiting for recovery to do its thing, I told him about this thread and the other one on the crashing apps. I told him what seems to have been discovered about SkyDrive, and he was very interested, so I gave him the URL and correct names of both threads.

As we talked, I told him that if he has any connection at all to Microsoft, or even at HP, maybe he could tell them about our problems, and maybe, just maybe, things might get fixed. He agreed to pass on what he learns from this thread (he will have to wait until he gets home to read it) to his superiors. He says it's a very obvious problem that comes up a lot.

So, I guess if my computer problems can in some way get us the attention we need from Microsoft, it could all be worthwhile. At least I'm back up and running, and typing from a bare bones Windows 8 computer that NumLock WILL NOT work on. From all indications, it seems that the HP techs are told there is no solution to the NumLock problem. I think she's already been asleep a couple or three times, but this is still Win 8.

    e-run #2

Still in a local account mode, this time I will open Weather app and let it open to see if my PC still go to bed.

I suspect that any app could lead to disaster, and those who call Skydrive, even if it is disabled.

UPDATE: 2 successful sleeps. Open more apps, PC config, Weather, music, pictures and windows store

Maybe there is a way to keep skydrive activated, it's a long shot.

I'm reading this thread about DCOM errors I've got yesterday:

DCOM errors when upgrading to Windows 8.1

It's related to Skydrive, and they solve it by disabling Skydrive schedule task. For me, it's not active since I'm local and non-SDrive activated. Maybe someone who wants to keep SD could just disable it...

Yesterday, I've got the Skydrive app opened (even if it's disabled) and my sleep failed with two DCOM errors in addition. Maybe it could help top not have a scheduled task from Sdrive...

Update #2 2 SLEEPS LATER and 6 metro apps opened!!

I made a mistake: the 2 scheduled tasks related to skydrive are not deactivated, but "ready". I deactivated them.

Can I switch my account to a local one or do I have to create one from scratch?

Ok, I figured out how to do that. Still, when opening file explorer I still see the skydrive folder with its contents. When I invoke skydrive on metro, however, I get a message that my system admin has blocked the use of SkyDrive. So is this think switched off or what?

This is mysterious. In local mode recheck the Skydrive policy.

    Maybe this will help:

Sorry I didn't get back to you sooner. I was asleep until just an hour ago and I needed to test my new little helicopter first. (RC, not a real one. )

    After I do this:

    I get this:

The map SkyDrive is just gone with me.

I stood up this morning, and I saw my PC was asleep, after it had done its daily backup routine. So, it should work this way. If not, something else is fishy with your system.

As you can see in the picture. I still have four other Clouds running, and they don't keep my PC awake... and the files are updates almost instantly.

And yes, it's called file explorer. For some stupid reason, I always call it Windows Explorer.

The moment my system goes to sleep, it takes about 5 to 10 seconds. Only hibernation takes longer, but also just about 1 minute or less, I think. Next time when the PC comes out of sleep to go hibernate, I'll try the count the seconds.

Wow nice! I am happy this is working! Don't forget to check for skydrive scheduled tasks!

Next thing would be to go back to Microsoft account without the sleep issue!

It's nice the Google drive on the PC You gave me idea! thanks
