    No, that's the standard setting.

You have to set it to Enabled, because this option prevents it from working. So, when you use Disabled or you set it to Not Configured, SkyDrive is working like it should. If you Enable this option, then you disable SkyDrive. I also misread the option the first time and my PC stayed awake. Going back to set it to its normal setting, I read it again and then noticed that I had to Enable it to prevent SkyDrive from working.

I reverted my PC back to its earlier normal status and settings and then went back in to Enable 'Prevent...' and now my PC is sleeping and hibernating like before.

So, I think we finally have found the cause of our troubles. It's SkyDrive and not the Power service.

The funny thing is, after preventing SkyDrive from working, now my apps are also working like they should. My Photos App always crashed on all my machines, after changing the SkyDrive setting, all my apps are working fine again. It seems the new version of SkyDrive in Windows 8.1 is flawed.

I already had noticed that the syncing part of SkyDrive was flawed. When I changed a file that was located in the SkyDrive folder, sometimes it took 30 minutes before my other machines received the updated file, other times, it took several days before I received the new file.

I'm almost 100% sure that our Sleep troubles, and our App troubles can be linked to SkyDrive.

To be sure, I have my freshly installed Win 8.1 back on my Laptop and I prevented SkyDrive from starting, like mentioned above, and my laptop is now also sleeping while the service Power is still enabled.

Luckily, I have 4 other cloud services running that I still can use for sharing my files. SkyDrive is now an empty folder on Microsoft's server.

The thing with Disabling the Power service probably also worker, because this is the service that receives the stay awake signal from SkyDrive. This last part is just a guess, but I don't think I'm wrong about it.
Rudy, im confused, Robwnz earlier suggests to double click "prevent the usage of skydrive", whilst you are suggesting to select the enabled setting for skydrive?

The option mention: "Prevent the usage of SkyDrive for file storage"

So, if you want to use it, you need to Enable it, because when Enabled, it prevents the usage of SkyDrive for file storage.

Microsoft just wants to make sure that you really want to disable it by working counteractive. (I hope I used the word counteractive correctly. )

As an original beta tester on SkyDrive, Microsoft has given me an extra 15 GB of storage space, so I'd like to be able to use it, to say the least. I also have 25 GB on Box from my purchase of the HP 500-056 that's due back from HP Repair today.

So, I guess my question is, "Will I be able to use SkyDrive by going to it manually" because I have several GB of very valuable files on my external data hard drive that I want to have backed up away from my house.
Did I add extra spaces between paragraphs? If so, I just typed it in on the forum itself.

If you mean that extra line sometimes, I use that to separate my comments a little more.

The thing you could do, if you really need SkyDrive, is the trick with the Power service. It worked for me as well. But then your screen doesn't go to sleep after a few minutes and stays on until the PC goes to sleep. (Well, it did with me. )

But the real cause of our trouble seems to be SkyDrive. Disabling it, even fixed the problems I had with Apps that I used. Even my Photos app didn't work until I disabled SkyDrive. Probably because my Windows Phone is sending pictures to SkyDrive and my Photos App was also trying to get access to those and SkyDrive was blocking it in some way, or whatever.

I'm sure that if someone with better access to Microsoft, gives this information to them, they will probably fix this problem a lot sooner than trying to fix the sleep problem.

SkyDrive even didn't sync my files properly, so I had already switched to Box for those files I shared on SkyDrive.

Personaly, I don't need Skydrive. But maybe someone skilled enough could find a way to fix it for good?

    a few more steps

Well, over the last night my pc has been sleeping better than I had....

    I did a few things

    1) I still have skydrive disabled by grouppolicy (which by itself didn't seem to help)
    2) I turned off Hybrid Sleep under my power plan
    3) I changed all the synchronise settings for SKYdrive to off.

To do this I went to the Windows 8 Start Screen, mouse to the top right and moved pointer down to click settings. Then at the bottom of the popup, I clicked change pc settings.
I clicked on SKYDRIVE, and clicked SYNC SETTINGS. And where it said "Sync your settings
on this PC" at the top, I changed this to off. Which greyed out all the options below. These options were all about syncing appearance and browser type stuff, not actual files.

(and it went to sleep again while I took a break from typing. Which is still good)

So, its all abit Alice going down the Rabbit Hole, but its worked for 12 hours.

My next step is to try and reenble Hybrid Sleep and see if it still holds. And to also reenable skydrive via group policy (but leaving sync settings off)

    Wish me luck

Hibernation should work, my PC is set to go to sleep after 30 minutes, and after another 30 minutes, it wakes up to go into hibernation. And it works.

But I'm curious to see if disabling those SkyDrive sync settings while keeping SkyDrive enabled will do the trick as well. I would test it here, but my weekend has started and I'm going to watch a nice movie this evening.

Maybe, I'll try it on my netbook tomorrow. Then I have three systems running with different settings, with two of them already going to sleep. The only one I haven't changed anything on is my netbook for the moment. I only use that one when I need it and then shut it down when I'm done. So, automatic sleep is no problem with that one. (And apps don't work because of the resolution. )

Ah, I see. The reason I though you may have composed in Word is that when I used to have a "complicated" message to send, I would compose in Word. And when I pasted it into my email client, I got extra spaces between paragraphs. My bad.

No problem here since I have my monitor and PC both set to 10 minutes. Nobody here to see . . .

Ah, I see you use Box; although I have it, I haven't "trusted" it yet. Guess I will . . .

Thank you for the information. When I get my computer back sometime today (looking out the window to see if there might be a truck), and since it's gonna be a brand new install of Windows 8 core, I'll upgrade it to 8.1 Pro and follow your suggestions, because I like a clean running PC.

Seems like Skydrive fix works for me too! For now anyways...

EDIT 2013-12-28 This did not fix the problem. For me, a MS update on Dec 11th fixed it.

I would like to try to disable Skydrive but I cannot access gpedit.msc for some reason. Is there another way to disable skydrive?
