Windows 8.1 refuses to sleep

    Windows 8.1

Strange Steve . . . I have a 103 MB update for Win 8.1 plus a boatload of security updates. Do you have 64 bit or 32 bit installed? Mine's 32 bit because my CPU isn't supported by 64 bit 8.1.

    They're downloading now.

To put this back on topic, anyone think we should remove all the things we've done to our computers and see if they'll successfully sleep? Since I have the least changes to my system, I will prolly be caught doing it in the next day or so.

Yeah, those are the security patches that we mentioned here before. Got my fingers crossed tho.

The 200mb down is KB 2887595. From MS "These updates (*.msu) provide a collection of performance and reliability improvements that are designed to improve the Windows 8.1 experience."

This update package fixes the issues that are documented in the following Microsoft Knowledge Base (KB) articles:
    • 2888929 "KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED" Stop error when a driver tries to close static streams for USB 3.0 devices in Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, or Windows Server 2012 R2

    • 2897150 Storage Spaces volumes go offline and then online continuously in Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2
    • 2897632 Logon screen turns black in Windows 8.1 or Windows Server 2012 R2
    • 2897634 Update is available that corrects the macro that is used to select between kernel mode and user mode versions of the NtCurrentTeb routine in Windows RT 8.1
    • 2897955 Update improves the performance of P2P video conferencing and enables HD Skype conferencing in Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2

With Power on, it doesn't matter whether Hybrid sleep is on or off. It won't sleep reliably.

Thanks, Lin! I just ran the large Windows Update, reinstated both Hybrid and Power Service, but so far, it looks like I'll have to turn off Power Service to make it go to sleep. I'm on my laptop for a program I don't have on Win 8 yet, so I'm going to wait a second full 15 minutes to see if Lady Dual Boot will sleep . . . At this stage, I'm guessing probably not.

Oh, and the runaway mouse? While hunting for a document in a very dark closet, he just snuggled up to me and now he's home on Lady Dual Boot where he belongs! Yay!

Anybody need a backup $10 Gear Head Mouse?

No, got enough mice!! Yep, surprise, surprise, still no reliable sleep after the big update.

Looks like we are left in the lurch and, possibly, will never get this sorted.

Yeah, looks that way. And, NumLock still doesn't work on bootup for me. Sigh . . . Why am I not surprised?

Fingers crossed Microsoft did not introduce new bugs this time - still have all hands full managing the existing ones.

At that rate it might take them several more months before they recognize and then fix the issue. But the day will come. In the meantime, going back to Windows 8 could be a rational choice.

This thread reflects a large variety of both motherboard chipsets and ethernet adapters. At the same time, these components are all very standardized and mainstream nowadays - there is nothing exotic to the hardware we have. Hence, the fact that we all observe the same problem, and that it was absent with version 8, tells me that the operating system is the only common factor to all our cases and the very likely the culprit. Until Microsoft releases a fix, we can at best find workarounds like disabling the power service.

Hmmmmm, since my new HP is in for repair, maybe I should just leave Windows 8 on it and leave well enough alone?

And we all sooooooooo welcomed Windows 8.1!

So far, I see three real issues with 8.1

    1. Num Lock isn't on at bootup, but then it's not on 8 either.
    2. The apps breaking thing . . . I don't put Windows Apps on my computer. For my money, I'll go out and buy what I need and want.
    3. And finally, the Sleep problem.

Oh, and I'm beginning to suspect Windows 8/8.1 of not letting the Automatic Document Scanner work right either. So far, they've admitted that a certain Canon printer won't and I'm thinking they should add my Brother MFC-7460DN to the list.

    Hi All

I don't think this has been covered in the last 23 pages on the 8/8.1 insomnia issue....

Anyway, I was having the exact same problem with both of my 8.1 64 bit machines refusing to go to sleep. One and AMD A3 machine, the other an i6. Both are running the OS from SSD, one a Corsair, one a Samsung.

I trawled the forums for solutions and tried everything I could find which made sense......

All drivers, Windows updates etc were the latest and greatest. Neither were connected to a homegroup despite 8's best efforts. I restored both PC power settings to default. I ensured any possible sources of wake ups were switched off in UEFI/BIOS - no magic packets, no crazy insomniac mice connected etc etc... And STILL both machines would refuse to go to sleep or to return to sleep after scheduled tasks.

In the end, the fix that worked for me - on BOTH machines - was to uninstall the proprietary software which came with each SSD and let Windows do all the optimization etc and BINGO!

I have no idea why this worked. I am sure there is a great explanation but I don't care. My PCs and I now get the sleep we need! I've since returned all the other settings - such as power profiles etc - to how I wanted them in the first place. Two weeks and so far so good.

I hope this helps someone else out there..... Now if someone could just fix that dang Refresh Windows issue I'm having......

Well done and good to share the good news.

    Pity I haven't got a SSD unit!
