    John,
HL2 was pure bliss for me, wish Valve would bring us HL3!

So you are saying that you have power services turned on and sleep timer is not broken after applying this patch? I noticed pointer stutters on the desktop, would applying the patch make a difference?

    This sleep issue is interesting.

I just got interested in it.

    I have 8.1 Pro wmc.
Mine won't sleep from the sleep settings.
But if I manually click sleep in the start menu (Classic Shell) it goes to sleep.

& does any of the other options.

Maybe emailing Microsoft customer support would help:

    I just emailed them:

David, this setting was on moderate from the beginning, so this is probably not the solution (at least for me). Thanks for finding a way to contact customer support. It would just be interesting to know whether MS knows about and acknowledges there is an issue or if they think - like some here - that it is an "exotic hardware/driver" issue.

It's not so exotic to me, my PC won't sleep since I upgraded to 8.1
and having troubles with usb drives disconnecting while i'm working
    which leads to program crash and to data,and work time, loss;
i'm really beginning to wonder what OS should I use to have a stable
    and reliable system ...
Windows 8 is becoming a toy to me

Whyona, you cannot really hurt anything by changing these settings. These settings have been proven to prevent sleep so they all have to be done before you can say that you still need help.
One of the reasons I don't turn Power off is that there are times I download a very large file and don't want the computer to go to sleep while downloading, as this will interrupt the download.
FYI, it doesn't interrupt activities such as downloading files or streaming audio and video, at least in my case the timer sleep is paused until any of these activities are accomplished.
Sorry, prism, but while beta testing for Microsoft, I've had tooooooooo many huge downloads stop because I forgot to tell the computer never to sleep. And in order to tell it when to sleep and when not to sleep, I am pretty sure I must have power turned on.

Nah, no torrents here (I tried to use it when I was on DSL and the downloads were really slow, but I couldn't figure it out.). As a beta tester for Microsoft, most of my large downloads have been from there, and it doesn't permit bit torrent, so . . .

I don't download movies or music, so no reason to even learn how to use the thing.

Mouse pointer stutters or freezes when you play certain games in Windows 8.1 and Windows Server 2012 R2

    No promises, but...
John, my keyboard's partner mouse skittered off somewhere and I can't find him. I bought a $9.99 GearHead mouse to use until I can track the little rat down.

This GearHead is working perfectly; the only thing I've noticed is that if I've been away from the computer for awhile, he won't move until I click him.

I'm going out there to see if I can find some updated drivers for him just to see if they might work.

Mouse lag fix is NO FIX for sleep issue.

I wish that contacting MS would help but they need to go down the same troubleshooting flowchart as my post in 168 has. Check the Technet and MS forum links I posted to see what MS recommends. They start with where we started "what does your powercfg -energy" Admin cmd say? etc, etc.

EDIT came across this little gem, an Idle timer tester! nah, my monitor goes asleep when it is supposed to so the timer must be working OK, sigh.

Maybe I wasn't clear but if you set the timer with pwr service activated and then deactivate pwr service and you are downloading and/or streaming, it will override the timer until the activity (downloading and/or streaming) ends. That is at least my experience.
