And yes, Bru, local account IS the key! lol
Dang, Orbital, I thought you'd just gone nutso, and the next email I clicked on says Microsoft has named Windows 9 Windows 10!

Maybe Windows 9 was the next Windows ME.
Installing Windows 10 x64 tech preview ENGLISH right now...

I installed Windows 10 with lan plugged (online) with all defaults settings. Opened cmd prompt admin and guess what? When doing powercfg /requests I got srvnet again and media player sharing. I deactivated files and printer sharing then reboot to kill srvnet and turned off media sharing and reboot again. I kept everything else as default. Let's see how it goes from now on.

My friends, be prepared to struggle again on windows 10 XD!

Edit: it is off topic, but I really want to tell you guys anyway. I did a sfc /scannow command to realize this (on a clean install)

    C:\Windows\system32>sfc /scannow

Beginning system scan. This process will take some time.

Beginning verification phase of system scan.
    Verification 100% complete.

Windows Resource Protection found corrupt files but was unable to fix some
of them. Details are included in the CBS.Log windir\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. For
example C:\Windows\Logs\CBS\CBS.log. Note that logging is currently not
    supported in offline servicing scenarios.

Lol by defaut it's corrupted! lol I noticed that in Windows 8.1 as well

    Did a dism /online /cleanup-image /restorehealth but it didn't work...

I would like to know if other may try this experiment.

To clarify, does win 10 install over the top of win 8.1 or does it need a clean install?

It comes as an complete .iso package and its own license number so new install is implied. Will start mine in a few minutes. go here to get your own copy:

BTW, I wonder if the site admins here have a new tenforums.com URL yet?

Of course it needs a clean install! Don't throw your current Windows yet or you will be sorry! I run both OS. On a positive note, for a preview, it is surprisingly stable!

Wonder if the Gold code will allow W7 upgrades? I've still got an W8 upgrade key that I never used. I know, Gold is a long way off, spring 2015 I believe.

Allright. I am on Win10. Yes, you CAN do an update from Win8/8.1 to Win10. It does one of those Update options and it will allow you to keep your settings and put everything into a .old folder just like a Win7 to Win8 update. I would not recommend it as MS could very easily kill old copies of this tech preview, just like they did with Win8 preview. So far, Win10 is completely compatible with every single program I have installed. Nice of MS not to tell programs that it is a new version of windows so they all get hot and bothered.

NO KEY is needed to install the Win10 preview. It comes already activated, at least the copy I got off of Win Preview site that I linked above. So you can do an update from Win 7 OR 8.

Now if I could just keep my hands off of the computer enough to see if it SLEEPS, I will be a happy man.

But does your computer sleep, Orbital!?

I'm thinking of trying Win 10, but this is an HP machine and if I did install it, I'd want to dual boot. Can I do that with UEFI?

I have also had this problem on my Desktop ever since I installed Windows 8.1.

I have a Realtek Ethernet adapter and I have noticed that the PC will go to sleep if the adapter is disabled or if the Ethernet cable is unplugged. Disabling IPv6 does nothing, and I am not part of a Homegroup either.

All categories say "None" in powercfg -requests as well.
