my computer knowledge is limited ,but that would make me think its some third party software or some bad device driver ,or bios function/setting ,just my way of thinking ,likely wrong ,! good luck
Sure looks like it points that way to me also, but leaning more towards BIOS, especially UEFI, which I assume most would not have with a 7 machine.

I don't have UEFI so I wouldn't know. Is there still a power setting within it? If so, some may want to change that to see if that makes a difference. Just a thought.
mine motherboard was purchased less than a year ago but only has regular bios ,with basic default settings

I would agree, but there are some here who have said they had a clean install of Windows 8.1 without anything else installed. Their computers wouldn't sleep.

At one stage I fiddled with my UEFI settings to no avail. But who knows whether there is anything there that makes a difference??

I reinstalled Windows 8 using bios and the same thing happens. The PC will stop sleeping if I use it for a while. If I disconnect the internet it will then go to sleep or if I log out then back in.

There must be some task that is keeping my pc awake because it sleeps fine during the day then stops at night. If I logout then back in or restart then sleep resumes to work. I have been looking in task scheduler and event viewer but just can't narrow down the cause. It seems to always happen after 7pm.

It turns out I was looking in the wrong area in task scheduler. I did some poking around and found a task running by the name of CreateObjectTask. which seems to run around the time my PC always stops sleeping. Now there are 4 instances of it running. Anyone familiar with this task? I am going to kill it and see if sleep resumes.

I've googled the problem and everyone seems to point to 8.1 with no remedy. So now I turn off completely at night.

Although mine sleeps properly (go figure), I still turn it off at night or when I'm going to be away for an extended period.
