Windows 8.1 refuses to sleep

  1. #1701

Errr, no, there is no easy fix. If there was, we wouldn't have 1700 posts and still be complaining!

If you use a MS account, try using a local one. That 'fixes' mine.

No one here offers any guarantees.

Sounds to me like your network card is set to wake the PC. Did you change the power management settings?

@NCguy - my shutdown is fine. Guess you just got lucky!! Sounds like it is having trouble closing down a program(s). But who would know with these systems? I did have great success with a Vista system that related to the wait-to-kill value in the registry. It was set way too high. Have a look here Windows: Speed Up Shut Down Time via Registry | a Tech-Recipes Tutorial
It is probably fine but worth a quick look. Just checked mine. It is the default 5000.
Thanks kenj. I'll check that out and just maybe the logs may lend some help. But I don't hold out much luck there...

It's been like this since 8.1. I did not change anything. I checked 'homegroup' and it's all Off. My power settings are 10 min for screen saver 10 min power off. But it flips back on and off all night. Sometimes it says asleep longer if I let it go by itself rather than select "sleep" from the menu. But it won't stay asleep.

Pretty much the same here, Deihmos; I tried using a local account when my PC wouldn't sleep with the Microsoft account. It still didn't sleep.

my computer knowledge is limited ,but that would make me think its some third party software or some bad device driver ,or bios function/setting ,just my way of thinking ,likely wrong ,! good luck

Sure looks like it points that way to me also, but leaning more towards BIOS, especially UEFI, which I assume most would not have with a 7 machine.

I don't have UEFI so I wouldn't know. Is there still a power setting within it? If so, some may want to change that to see if that makes a difference. Just a thought.

Changing from uefi to bios sounds like a good option. I am going to try it and see what happens.
