    That is very encouraging news!
BTW, how do you know that MS will release fixes next week?

Microsoft books critical IE, Windows fixes for next week - Computerworld

looks like just security patches. Don't expect any miracle sleeping potions! Where IS that wicked witch? I could sure use that apple!

BTW, I DID have a problem playing MP3 files with windows media player until I set my Cooler Master Storm 5.1 headset to stereo. I just got around it by using Media player classic to play MP3 files instead.

I just knew it was patch Tuesday next week. Sometimes, they also use it to send out unexpected fixes, but it's a waiting game until that day to really know what fixes they will send out extra.

I had also posted a message about this problem on the Dutch Microsoft Facebook page; their solution was to check all my drivers. I have now sent them a message to inform them that disabling the Power service fixed the not sleeping part of Win8.1. Every little message to them hopefully can help them do something about it, especially when you post it on a public forum as Facebook.

That's the ticket, Rudy! Put it out there in front of the masses and they can't tell us it's our fault and just ignore it.

Intel DG33 BUX (older than dirt) mobo Dual Core E7500, 4 GB RAM, with 32 bit clean Win 8 install and update to 8.1 from Microsoft Store.

I have done nothing to Win 8.1 except to install a couple or three programs, so it's pretty clean.

I've come into the room and noticed my computer wasn't asleep, but I had set it for 30 minutes of inactivity and thought I'd been gone less time than I figured. Now, after this thread and all the sleep problems, I'm not so sure.

Going to set it to go to sleep (both computer and monitor) in ten minutes . . . back later.

Never, ever would I have thought that the source of the problem lies with the actual power management system! All that time wasted seeking a stupid driver to no avail.

The Power setting is NOT the cause of the sleep issue. It is just a workaround. There is a lot of things that get broke when the power setting is turned off, some of them must be the reason for not sleeping. Nor have all of us verified that it fixes all of our sleep problems. I have come up with 4 or 5 "verified" solutions only to have it fail after a few days. Why in hell did they work for a while and THEN start acting up again? No updates, no changes to settings, just still awake the next morning. Then it sleeps OK for a while more. Intermittent.

Let's put this on the "wait and see" category!

As for getting this out there, the best place is the Technet forums which is run by Microsoft, the closest we get to a direct line to the company. I have posted on it on the one post that is about this same problem. Very few posts there tho which I am surprised. That means it is not that big a problem as a search of the web also shows little posting. Interesting problem.

OK, the verdict is that the monitor goes to sleep, but not the "box". It's just as noisy with the sleeping monitor as it is with the non-sleeping monitor, so I'm pretty sure Windows didn't go to sleep.

So, add one more computer to the equation. BTW, I'm not going to try to fix the problem since I usually turn off my computers at night.

Wynona, yeah, I didn't expect it to fix all the issues. Make sure to go through all of these posts in this thread as there may be an easy fix that you are just not aware of. For instance, in advanced power settings, there is a "let media sharing allow sleep" or something.

This is an interesting workaround. I am curious to give it a try, but I would like to know more about the Power service first. Does anyone know what its purpose is or what exactly it controls?

@john, do you still have your Homegroup set up or did you create a Workgroup as describe in the Maximum PC article? I'm curious to know if the Power service workaround will also work under a Homegroup scenario.

I haven't gone back to the beginning yet because I thought I'd try "advanced power settings" but can't find anything like that on this desktop. Could it be that advanced power settings will only appear on a laptop?

Next, is there a way to print the whole thread? I know I can go in and cut and paste to Word 2010, but that's a chore with 159 messages, most of which are relevant. Then again, a summary of what has been tried, what works an hour, a day, several days, etc. might be something I'd like to see.

OK, I'm going to start cutting and pasting . . . somebody tap me on the shoulder if the thread can be printed. I have laser toner and plenty of two-sided paper.
