So far, a complete solution hasn't been found. As time goes on, though, Microsoft has fixed the problem (inadvertantly, I think) for some of us, myself included.
But it sounds like others are newly broken by the updates. It's clearly still wack a mole. If I could rename this thread it would be how to play Microsoft wack a mole.

Just install StandbyHelper and forget about it until the code is rewritten (if ever). I still follow the thread out of curiosity but I am certainly no longer stressed out over sleep issues. It really is a simple fix with no side affects.
NC, I just had my computer not sleep when I had a program called Corsair Link running, even with Standby Helper running as well. It looks like if a program periodically pings the system hardware or mobo that it prevents sleep. I exited the Link program and sleep works fine now.

Standby Helper is not a cure-all.

Thanks for the heads up on that. I will say though in my experiences so far there is no comparison between the consistency of the two. I think StandbyHelper uses a mostly brute force method which may not be acceptable depending on what your running. For me, its no problem at all. I think the complexity of all the exceptions is probably the root cause of wack a mole.

Several including myself have reported StandbyHelper does not work.

My update: Running a local account allowed my computer to sleep. Until I joined a HomeGroup then it became hit or miss.

My Windows 7 computers (one is my workhorse desktop with dozens of programs, the other is a laptop with nothing on it just like my Win 8) both sleep just fine belonging to the same HomeGroup.

The problem is Windows 8.1. No doubt about it.

Sorry to hear that. It's the last great hope for mankind. I hope I don't do something stupid if it fails on me.

It's hard to find a good sleeping W8 pc these days. I would hate to see you do something stupid that you might regret late on
