Windows 8.1 refuses to sleep

  1. #141

Yes, it does. Most of these values are retrieved from the registry. The only problem one I have noticed is the password on wakeup is set to on. I normally had this off but I can live with that till I find how to change that. Not a big deal with me. The trade off is the reliable and instant (meaning normal) sleep.

@John. Not sure exactly how many values get reset. But the std ones don't cause me any strife (that I have noticed!).

Seems really weird that shares have anything to do with sleeping. But there you go.

Ok, not sure if this is going to last over the longer term but preliminary tests suggest that Linw's workaround does indeed work. I can live with this solution at least until a patch is released. One annoying side effect is that there is no way to put the monitors to sleep which means I instead get a black backlit screen which consumes as much power as when the screens are active.

Well, my computer was awake when I came downstairs. Whatever I do seems to work for a while then I need to work on it again. I will try power solution. I too can live with typing in the password. Prism, I will check if my monitor does indeed stay active. I set the sleep and monitor off times as the same. Perhaps if we turn the monitor off before sleep?

EDIT: K, it slept AND the screen was in sleep mode (slowly blinking yellow power button light- no the always on blue light). I will turn off password protection (which I normally do not use anyways) in the PC settings on the start screen. My new settings!

EDIT 2013-12-28 This did not fix the problem. For me, a MS update on Dec 11th fixed it.

John, I think not because in my case I had the screen timer kick in before sleep!

Monitors OK, here, as well. Monitor has same shutdown time as sleep.

Didn't know about the startup password in PC Settings. Couldn't see it but only time for a quick look.

It is unsatisfactory that we have to stop the power service but I can live with that till a 'proper' solution is found. At least my comp reliably shuts off after it wakes in the night.

Me, I am not so sure that this is "the solution" as I have had so many "solutions" in the past that then failed a few days later, heh.

Start Menu-charms bar-change pc settings-accounts-change to local account.

Prism, check to see if you have a setting on the monitor that allows it to power down after X minute of activity.

I've read that if power service is disabled, windows audio does not work, can anyone confirm this.

@john, I had the timer set already but cannot access it since I shut power in msconfig.
    @videodj, audio works fine!

    Hey guys,

I just wanted to let you know that I tested the trick to disable the service 'power', and it worked for me.

Luckily, for me, I did a clean install of Win8.1 two days ago, and the only thing I did was disabling Homegroup because I still prefer the normal way of setting up my network.

Sleep worked for about one day and then stopped working again. I didn't try anything to fix it, because I was planning to wait for the updates, they probably will send out next week, to see if this would fix it. However, ever reading here that disabling the service 'Power' would fix it; I decided to try it now that my Windows was still rather freshly installed.

Well, it seems that this is indeed the culprit, because after disabling this service, the sleep function of my PC seemed to work again. My PC has gone to sleep for several times now.

To be sure, I checked it by enabling the service, and again, my PC didn't want to go to sleep. Disabling it again, fixed it again.
So, it seems the problem is with this service.

To check it even further, I did the same thing with my other 2 PCs afterwards, and now the three of them are snoring. Maybe, I will reinstall the other two PC's also, but I'm going to wait until I know what kind of fixes Microsoft will send out next week.

I anything would change, I'll report it, but I have a feeling the service that caused the problems has been found!

linw, thanks for sharing your solution with us!
