Windows 8.1 refuses to sleep

  1. #1421

@fookoof. Are you seeing that prog in Task Mgr, Windows Processes? Not seeing it here, probably because I have a local login that disables Onedrive sync settings.

And my PC is sleeping really well ATM.

I'm in the middle of a different related test at the moment so I can't for now, but has anyone tried simply renaming/deleting the C:\Windows\System32\SettingSyncHost.exe file to prevent it from starting up? Probably not the best idea to try without either a backup or a way in place to replace the file without booting into the OS first.

According to an MVP at What is "host process for setting synchronization", and why is - Microsoft Community this can be turned off by turning off sync settings, which is something I've already tried. But perhaps changing sync settings doesn't actually stop the task? Just leaves it running with options set to not sync? If that's the case the running task COULD still be causing a problem I suppose...

The only place I've found it so far is Task Manager > Details tab.

    EDIT:
It appears this task is controlled by (at least) the process under Task Manager > Processes tab > Background processes section > "Host Process for Setting Synchronization." You can check for this by right clicking on Host Process for Setting Synchronization and choosing Go To Details or Open File Location. Choosing both options will take you to the corresponding location and highlight the process/file involved.

So that's another location I've found it now, but I think it's just a different way of looking at the same process.

FWIW we have already been down the OneDrive issue in this thread and have proven that it does not solve the problem for most (all?) of the users who have tried it in this thread. From quick Google searches it appears this process is used for OneDrive.

Thanks, Gork, for the file info and location details. I can't see any settingsync files active in my comp (maybe that's why it is now sleeping well!!).

Agree with your last para comments. Also tallies with me not seeing that exe running as onedrive and sync is killed here.

But, hey, let's keep this one going. Like does the absence of this running exe solve the problem for everyone? (Yes, I know, we find it hard to believe there is just one magic bullet!).

OK, devil's advocate here . . . and not liking it one bit!

I found SettingSyncHost under Details in Task Manager and it's not disabled. Yet my computer has been sleeping properly since the December Update when several people's sleep issues were fixed.

I'm not bragging one bit . . . I'm just giving information that may or may not help the remainder of those with sleep issues who are actively trying to track down the reasons for same.

Why will my computer sleep with SSH active while others' computers won't.

    All contributions are important, Wyn.

Can I assume because you have that exe running that you have onedrive and sync settings active? I ask as I have sync killed and I don't have that exe running.

Standby with remote opens is hidden for all power plans in my version of 8.1 (Home something). The registry edit has to be done to make it appear. Several articles about it.

I have OneDrive disabled (set to Off in PC Settings) yet I still have SettingSyncHost in Processes. I am running an MS account where you are not.

Yes, Lin, you can assume, since I haven't changed anything from default. I use OneDrive for storing some very important data. I don't see any reason for syncing things to make all my computers look the same; I prefer them to all look different.

So far I've tried the following:

    1) Verify computer isn't sleeping
    2) Log off my MS account
    3) Log into my local account (sleep always works on my local account)
    4) Log back off the local account
    5) Log into my MS account again (sleep is reset like rebooting when I log out of my MS account, into the local, and back to the MS)
    6) Checked, and SettingSyncHost.exe was not running
    7) Set sleep to 1 minute
    8) Computer slept after 1 minute
    9) Woke computer up
    10) Checked, and SettingSyncHost.exe was running
    11) Computer slept after 1 minute

So my short testing so far seems to indicate that SettingSyncHost.exe simply running isn't what's causing the problem. My testing so far does not indicate that SettingSyncHost.exe is not involved, however.
