    That's the "$64 question" isn't it ... Why?

I wish there was more diagnostic tools available from MS or whomever so that I & everybody else can actually investigate the problem and come up with .... "your PC fails to sleep because ????????". If it's a MS problem, which IMHO I believe it is, then report the findings to MS to get 'em to fix it.

This W/E I will do yet another clean install of Windows 8.1 & then a upgrade to 8.1.1 (I wish MS would release the 8.1.1 ISO) to see if I can't finally fix the problem. If not, then I will UPgrade to Windows 7 Ultimate (mind you, the SRVNET sleep issue seems to be just as big a problem in Windows 7 as it is in Windows 8.1.x).

Subsequent to my earlier post (#1361) a hour or so later even the SRVNET entry in the Power Requests queue cleared itself, yet my PC still failed to sleep. So this occurrence of insomnia must be caused by something else. But what? WU seems to be the guilty culprit this time around.

Anyway, I ran a POWERCFG /ENERGY report and as per all of the other times that I've run a ENERGY report it said there was nothing to stop my PC from going to sleep!!!

At this point, I rebooted my PC as per your suggestion, logged onto Windows and 30 mins later the PC fell asleep.

Powering up the PC this morning, it duly went to sleep again after 30 mins of inactivity.
There is something in the maintenance procedures. I just don't have the tools to see the internals that are being toggled. it's apparently not one of the obvious registers that everyone looks at for sleep problems. Also StandbyHelper seems to ignore whatever it is and sleeps like it should.

There's a good chance you may never figure it out. Nuke and pave is certainly no guarantee for this. But good luck just the same.

the worst part is, is sometimes it will go to sleep no problem. for example after a clean restart. after a few times of going to sleep normally, the next time it won't. it stays on, but the screen turns off, and it starts to heat up. fans go full and nothing responds. thats what make it even more frustrating is that i know it's capable of doing it.

Routine maintenance may be set for 2am but most of the time it misses that window and runs at random times in the background. I'm guessing that in your case yours quits sleeping after the maintenance run which you would likely never see happen. A reboot enables sleep again until the next maintenance run.

WOOHOO!! Newest round of updates has solved the problem!!!

It looks like the newest round of updates for Windows 8.1.1 (May Patch Tuesday Updates) has fixed the Sleep Problem for Me!!!!!!
I have more than 5 systems (all different hardware configurations) that won't sleep (all updated to 8.1.1).
They all exhibit the same thing - Reboot the system and they sleep for a day - after an overnight (I'm assuming after auto maintenance is performed - BOOM, no more sleep until another reboot)
But, the May Patch Tuesday Updates on my main system - it's been 3 days (and nights) and system is still sleeping properly! Now to install the Patches on my other 4 systems and see if it resolves them!! Stay Tuned................

I chose not to run the updates as of yesterday because of thunderstorms and I just haven't been around much. So I went ahead and ran them this morning after I read your post. Well .... don't know about sleep just yet but I can report that the update caused my sleep-event logging to start working again. I couldn't even get the logging to work with a repair install so there must have been some substantial fixes in that batch of updates.

Hopefully I will have the same luck that you are experiencing with the sleep working. But I hate to rain on your parade. 3 days is good but not enough to put it to rest. I wouldn't claim victory until you've at least made it through a few more patch Tuesdays and driver updates which could very easily break it again. But miracles do happen.

Oh, almost forgot to ask. Did you look in scheduled tasks to see if maintenance actually ran during your 3-day test? It's not uncommon for it to abort the run for several days in a row due to various things going on in your machine when it tries to start.

    Not for me...

And just to provide clarity - though I believe I've explained it before - my computer will sleep for a time after a clean reboot but eventually stops on a time scale unrelated to the routine maintenance.
