Well, rediscovered the Power service exe filename. In win 8 and 8.1 it is umpo.dll and these files are different sizes from each other.

But in 8.1.1 there is no umpo.dll so another change was made.

So, no way to try a swap if now running 8.1.1. Probably a silly idea anyway!!

You are indeed correct. I checked my system with Everything, a file finder, and xplorer2lite and neither saw that file. There is something about security settings that seem to make some system files invisible to 3rd party tools. Bit of a trap.

Checking mine again with windows explorer, I see that the umpo.dll file is the same one as is in 8.1.

Thanks for the headsup, Caper. Just might try the swap, then!!!

There are three um*.dll files so I swapped in all three from win 8. Haven't noticed anything different so far, but mine was sleeping pretty well before, apart from some relapses. Certainly, windows hasn't seemed to notice the changes!

Will leave these files there for a while to see whether there are any sleep failures.

For those looking for a 3rd party power/shutdown type utility such as, Standby Helper that has been mentioned earlier in this thread, I found this yesterday: SmartPower. It is very comprehensive and free for personal use or 20 UK pounds for commercial use.

    Home Page: SmartPower

See the bottom of the home page for more screen shots and/or the User Guide - SmartPower for a detailed guide on how to use SmartPower.

The D/L is only 294KB & SP runs as a service.

SP requires Net Framework v3.5 which is not installed by default in Windows 8, however, .Net v3.5 can be installed via:

Control Panel => Programs & Features => Turn Windows Features On or Off

or if you don't have a internet connection on the PC then .NET v3.5 can be installed from your windows 8 installation media.

From a elevated command prompt run:

    dism.exe /online /enable-feature /featurename:NetFX3 /All /Source:?:\sources\sxs /LimitAccess

where: "?:\sources\sxs" is the sxs path of your Windows 8 installation media.

During installation SP will ask to modify some of the settings in your active Power Plan .... do so.

SP didn't add a icon to my desktop but is easily accessed from the new 8.1.1 applications start page.

All of the various options can be disabled/enabled individually, as can SP itself. By default all options are disabled except for the Schedules option which is set to 7x24hr uptime.

I've installed SP & it works for me.

Looks like another piece of code capable of reliable shut down without all the ridiculous requirements like that built-in to 8.1 in order to function.

SP certainly looks comprehensive. Haven't tried it but may do so later.
