    Thanks I'll take a look.

This morning after I powered on the PC & after using it for a short while, I manually put the PC to sleep, switched off the keyboard & mouse, made sure it was sleeping & went to have a shower. By the time I finished the PC had awoken from it's snooze. At the time I didn't have the time to investigate any further.

Many hours later ..... looking at the Eventlog the PC was awoken by:

The system has returned from a low power state.
    Sleep Time: ‎2014‎-‎04‎-‎29T22:42:39.321066300Z
    Wake Time: ‎2014‎-‎04‎-‎29T22:47:43.704398300Z

Wake Source: Device -Realtek PCIe GBE Family Controller

At least with this I have the option to disable the ability for the Network Controller to wake the PC.

So my question ... is it safe to do so?

    Yes, uncheck that wakeup option.

    @John / @ Wynona-

Apologies, I obviously did not do a good job of explaining myself. The issue I am talking about with @BazzaG specifically revolves around the "Intel USB 3.0 Extensible Host Controller - 0100" hardware that some manufacturers utilize to implement their USB 3.0 ports.

Can either of you use the Device Manger to confirm that you have this hardware? It would be interesting to hear that someone with this specific hardware is not having sleep issues under 8.1.

@BazzaG - I also had to change my Wake on LAN to "Magic Packet" only. If I left the general "Allow LAN to wake" I would see the same issue that you describe.

    Bazz and Ewtalor,

Bazz, WAY back in post 168, I put up a list of things to do that needs to be done to prevent ordinary sleep issues. turning off Wake from LAN is one of them:
    Windows 8.1 refuses to sleep

Ew, I do indeed have that driver installed and runnning:

Mind you, I would not be here if I did not have sleep issues at some point or another, but we have already tried turning off USB 3.0 (and IPV6 and Homegroup and certain apps and...) without success. If it helps your situation that is great, but there may be other causes, including an update from ASUS (my latest is Intel_LAN_Win7_8_VER181590

I'm "out of town" until tomorrow evening and don't have the desktop with me; only the laptop and it's too old to have USB 3.0, so I'll check as soon as I can.

BTW, I seem to remember that someone somewhere back in this thread said disabling USB 3.0 worked for them.

I, also, have that USB3 driver and my machine sleeps with a local account.

But isn't the problem with the USB dvr that it wakes the machine whereas most problems on this thread are about the machine not sleeping after the timeout.

I too am having sleep issues and i do have that exact piece of hardware on windows 8.1. when it goes to sleep the monitor goes off and fans kick into high and no response from the computer. i have to force a shutdown. i cant find any logs relating to anything.. I'm going to try disabling usb 3.0 in bios. It's ridiculous it's not supported in 8.1.. my pc came with it why would they all of a sudden stop supporting it?

I've enabled the "Magic Packet" option & we'll see what happens. If necessary I'll disable the wake option entirely.

I also have the MS USB3 driver:
