Methinks that's what the rest of us are looking for, Caper! And what I have at the moment, and hoping 8.1.1 won't break it.

It does use some MS programs to run, but it is a script after all. I trust it to do absolutely no harm.
Ok, got it and installed it. It will take some time but initially it's working just as advertised

So, that leads me to wonder. Why does standby helper have no problem enforcing sleep when windows 8 internally is pathetic at the task? Is it because SH is using brute force and ignores anything that would choose to interrupt the process? If that's in fact the case, and I don't think its too much of a problem, we just need to be sure that we disable SH before running some kind of long update or batch process? Maybe like the update that's scheduled for this Tuesday? BTW, I don't let my updates run automatically.

NCGuy, I think we are OK doing things that keep the idle timer from kicking in. I watched a movie the other day on YouTube and the Standby Helper obligingly kept from sleeping. As for MS updates, Win8 treats them differently from Win7. Remember how Win7 would suddenly reboot in the middle of something after a update without asking? I do not miss that at all. Win8 does updates a lot more quietly and in the background. I would not be surprised that updates would allow sleep and continue to download once the computer is awake again, I couldn't say.

Caper, did you ever have troubles with sleep tho? I had it with 8.1, it went away after a Dec 13 update, then occasionally cropped up again after I updated to Win8.1.1.

no ,only used it for awhile after installing win8 ,then disabled ,and only started to use it again when I started watching this thread .maybe one day I will install something that makes it fuggup

I installed the new 8.1.1updates manually I got from msdn[5 of them ] and it prompts to restart the computer after every update

The Win8.1.1 update is in. I have disabled Standby Helper and now to see if the computer sleeps reliably.

Windows RT 8.1, Windows 8.1, and Windows Server 2012 R2 Update April, 2014 Select Issues that this update fixes. Nothing about sleep tho..

Sigh . . . it was nice while it lasted . . . came into the computer room to shut down and she was wide awake!

I just let Windows 8.1.1 install and now she won't sleep!

Don't feel too bad. None of the early installers of the update reported any success with sleep as well. Besides, you would miss us too much....

    Whoop! Whoop! Whoop!

Just came into the computer room and she was asleep! I even bent down to the tower to be sure nothing was running! Yayyyyyyyyyyy So, I guess 8.1.1 didn't break it after all.

Lappy sleeps too, but waking her up with the Mouse is fruitless . . . Gotta punch the Power key to wake her up! I can do that.

BTW, Lappy is a few years old and has been updated (clean installs, all) from Vista to Windows 7 to Windows 8. I went to the Store to install Windows 8.1, but it was skipped and it shouldn't have been and Windows 8.1.1 was installed . But that's another story.

Unsurprisingly, Windows 8.1.1 did not fix the insomnia issue with my computer.
