I have things like resumes I need to update, but when I try to click on any area of the document, I instead get a dotten blue line around the entire doc, and it won't let me edit. Didn't happen until I got windows 8. Help please? (Even if I copy and try to make a new doc it still happens.)

It may be running in "Compatibility Mode" -So save it as a regular "Doc" file, not a "Docx" file. and then open THAT.

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
I have office 2007. Tried word pad and same thing happens, only with a solid black line around it. Have tried saving it all sorts of ways and I still get the dotting blue line and the inability to edit. Thanks for your help. Any other ideas? (It doesn't happen with all my documents---just the ones I really need.

Can you elaborate on what this really means? Are you saying that "some" office 2007 documents open correctly and others do not?

yes, some open correctly and others do not. (Or rather some I can open and edit, and others open but when I try to edit they get the broken blue line around the doc and won't let me edit.)

Were the ones you can't open created under a different version of Office originally (or do they have a different extension)?

If the content in the document was in fact a graphic it would do what you describe. Any chance that is what is going on?

So, the Docs were made under Word from Office 2003 - You'll have to open the docs with Word 2003 to deal with this issue. They were protected Docs, made with 2003, so you can open em with 2007, but to mess with the Legal Blackline thing, you have to open them in Office 2003.

I'll keep looking.

Well, it was created with Office 2003, it's the only way that could have been done. I don't know if you can access that feature under Office 2007-2013.

Honestly, there are several of them, and I don't recall which they were made with. I have given up. I could have retyped at least one in the time I've spent looking for fixes. Now my printer doesn't work. Attack of the machines.
Thanks anyway, I appreciate the time you took to respond.

No Problem. You should be able to select the text and paste it into a new doc, if you can, problem solved.
