Fan at full speed during shut down and sleep

Hello all,

I recently purchased a new desktop and it came with Win8 installed on it. Everything worked fine for the first two weeks. Then, I noticed my fan was running at full speed when I'd come into the room after a while. My desktop was in sleep mode, so I was like, WTF...? Woke my desktop up and the fan returned to normal. Strange I thought, maybe it was just a one time thing. Nope... Every time my computer goes into sleep mode, the fan kicks on full blast. Okay... maybe no sleep mode, but the fan will shut off when I shut down my computer, right? Nope again. When my computer is shut down, the fan is still running at full speed. The thing is, when my computer is in sleep mode or shut down, the fan runs at full speed, but when I'm using it (like now) the fan is normal.

I've been looking around trying to find something related to my problem. I've came across a few articles on the forums, like http://www.eightforums.com/performa...still-running-after-shutdown-windows-8-a.html. Seems like my same problem, but it was during his install he shut down Windows. However, there was talk of this "bcdedit /set disabledynamictick yes", but I don't really want to mess with the my boot.ini files... I'm not bad at small programs, but I really don't want to toy around and destroy my desktop right now.

I've read some other articles about a Win8 laptop in idle mode with the same problem, and they said it was antivirus related. I figured that if that were the case, shouldn't have I seen it during the first time I booted up my desktop?

Finally, I may be crazy here, but I think I started noticing this problem AFTER I installed some windows updates from Microsoft... I don't know if there is a way to verify that everything went smoothly, I kinda assumed and left my computer running while it was updating...

So all that being said, can someone please point me in the right direction so I can get this problem fixed? It is just super annoying and I'm a bit salty that I have to baby sit my desktop so the fan doesn't sound like a jet taking off...

Many things can cause this such as system maintenance when idle, have you noticed the harddrive accessing constantly when the fan speed is high?

Could be disk defrag, windows update installing, anti-virus scan when idle...

If its a scheduled task, go to your start screen and start typing task, click on task scheduler and see whats been tasked.
You can check from past 2 hours, 24hrs, days, etc.....

@Brooklyn,
No, like my computer is completely shut down. There are no lights on, HDD is off, and the fan is still running at full speed. I can see the fan running while sleeping if the computer is running some background action like a disk defrag, but its not.

@Vadikan,
My Maintenance is scheduled for 3:00 AM. I notice this problem with the sleep/shut down fan running when I go to work and come back (8:30AM-6:30PM).

I'm competent but not a wizz with computers, but I think the computer thinks its starting to overheat when in shut down/sleeping, so the fan goes to full speed to cool off the insides. I'm thinking about moving the fan on the motherboard to another port. Maybe that will help?

Thanks for the replies,
Matt

If you got Cool N Quiet on it, you can turn it ON on the BIOS. You didn't mention what kind of system it is - If it's a Gategay? That's a common occurrence. Even with CNQ turned on. The reason why it's turning on full speed, is cos the system is running hot. Is it the system fan or the CPU fan that is running high?

Matt,

Scheduled ≠ Executed at the scheduled time. If the latter is missed because you PC was off or you were working on it, automatic maintenance (AM) starts the next time your PC goes idle (see the link in my previous post).

The goal is to complete all tasks under the AM umbrella ASAP, therefore they run under the high performance power plan and heavily utilize CPU resources. That's the reason your fan makes some noise to cool off the CPU. It's all perfectly normal.

People are historically concerned about fan noise when they leave the PC unattended :) It was pretty much similar with the previous Microsoft OSs. The difference is that AM in Windows 8 consolidates all maintenance tasks (they have no triggers in the Task Scheduler) under one scheduled task that runs them concurrently at full throttle.

Yah, during Sleep, if you have scheduled a Disk Optimizing session, it will be mroe active. Also, when the system is running a screensaver I think you can set the Optimizer to run. I don't know where those settings are, but I've seen them, maybe in Advanced Power Options.

Decreasing clock speed only slowed me down, still getting the fan noise when shutdown.

To be honest, I don't really know which fan it is. I think its the system fan and not the CPU fan... I'll find out later.

I don't think my computer is overheating, but I have been wrong before... If it is true my computer is going haywire tring to finish the... automatic maintenance...? then i can see that. Is there a way I can set that to a specific time only and then shut down? Like during the night from 4-7 and then no more?

Side note, why would my fan still run if my computer is shut down? I don't see any LED's blink to tell me the HDD is working and i'm getting no output.

No, it should be totally shut off, so the system may be in sleep mode. Hit the space key, or shake the mouse. Some Dell systems go into sleep mode and the Power button goes Yellow, and it will not wake. IN a case like that, the fans will be running. You have to hold the power button for 5 secs and then restart it - Usually when Dells start doing this, it means you gotta get a new power supply, cos this happened with my Dell Precision 370 Workstation.

Then you got something waking the system up, check your Task Manager, see if you have any processes that want to start at certain times of the day. It could be Disk Optimizer, but I'm thinking it's an app that came with the system that loads on startup. Or, you have Wake on Lan turned on, and someone is trying to connect to your system remotely.

I'll tell you this little story, I used to use Photoshop 9. It loads a service called LMserver or something. It has to be running, or Photoshop won't load. One day, I went to do some work, and when I came home, there was a brand new printout of the last thing I had ever opened in Photoshop - And I know I had not printed it myself. When I checked Event viewer, it told me that some remote process started LMserver, and it told my system to print that sheet!

So after that, I BLOCKED the process from the net in the firewall, set it for Local Host Only. That never happened again. And I also went back to Photoshop 7 too.

You can set 4 am as AM time and allow AM to wake up PC from sleep in Control Panel. Then you must put your PC to sleep instead of shutting it down or hibernating.

I think you're right, i do not see any maintenance going on all night long
(unless you are trying to backup a HUGE number of files),
also considering that you have a pretty powered system, the
PC must shut down ultimately, i would factory reset and if
the problem persist bring for warranty repair.

Is there a way I can check to see what is going on with my computer during a sleep session? I mean like full everything. see whats being run, how much power I'm using, what my CPU is at, temperature of computer itself, and anything else I can think of. I figured that if I can fix the problem while its in sleep mode, I can fix the problem while shut off.

Also, I bought an HP Envy, so I can go around uninstalling all of HP's bloatware

For HP's Bloatware, you should remove it with Yamicsoft's Windows 8 Manager's "Smart Uninstaller" - For instance to get rid of ALL of the wild tangent games, find the HP Game controller, you uninstall that, it should list ALL of the games installed, you will have to check them all off. Unless you want to keep one or two of them. After the uninstaller is finished, it will scan for what's left on the drive and allow you to choose the remaining files. If the uninstaller tells you it wants to reboot to finish, DON'T. Just let the scanner finish, and then remove all the extra gunk it may find.

It's a free 15 day trial

Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
This issue probably caused by hardware driver problem.

I have similar problem solved and would like to share. My laptop is TOSHIBA Satellite. After I install the Win 8.1, my computer fan blows at max speed for a few seconds when it is sleeping or shutting down, the situation never happened when I use the Win 7. After many tries and study, I find solution.

I had installed the version 11.5.2.1001 of Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver on Win 8.1. After it is uninstalled, the problem is solved and fan will not blowing fast when computer shutting down. I installed new version 12.8.1.1000 of Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver and the problem never happens again.

So, I guess Win 8.1 is a very new OS and you should update your hardware driver completely. The Intel Rapid Storage Technology Driver is a basic optimization tool from INTEL. The older version may conflict with Win8.1. I suggest you to install only necessary drivers for your hardware (large part of hardware is already driven by Win 8.1 itself) and keep drivers the newest version.
