New Icon showing on Win 8 Splash Screen

I posted this on the Installation and Setup forum but on second thought I figured I should post it here.
I'm using a Microsoft Surface Pro with Windows 8 installed and still getting used to it. A couple days ago a new icon with the number 50 started appearing on the lower right of the Splash screen. (Not the Start screen),
You should be able to see here:

Anyone have a clue what this is indicating?

Looks like the "People" app, those are now many notifications you got. Open that app and close out the notifications, see if the number changes. You may be able to remove it from the Lockscreen, it would be under PC settings.

    Recently lost my Windows 8 on my main PC, had to go back to Windows 7.
hi,mine has emails and facebook messages notification, if it is the lock screen ,do as XWEAPONX says and go to charms bar and settings ,and change pc settings ,then personalize and if lock scree is highlighted ,right click on it and set to defaults ,if you wish to get rid of the 50 message

It's the same issue as when in Windows XP, it used to show how many "unread Emails" you had in Outlook or Outlook Express, easily turned off.
