Windows 8.1 has no Media Player

Along with all the other things, that don't seem to work in the Windows 8.1 beta, I noticed that the Media Player is also missing, while they did only say Windows 8.1 Pro with Media Center Beta.

Are they planning on totally removing Media Player also?

My 8.1 Preview appears to have it. Try typing "windows media player" into the search box and see if the WMP configuration window pops up for you.

    Hi there
while not the answer you wanted why not just download (FREE) VLC player -- IMO far better than WMP and handles more codecs (both audio and video) too.

    Windows 8 Pro with Media Center/Windows 7

I see lots of people complaining that WMP and WMC if installed no longer can handle the file types they used to be able to swallow whole. In Windows 7 and even XP, if WMP needed a codec, it downloaded. But 8 No longer does this, and even if you install a codec pack the codecs are not applied to Media Player.

My Solution is to always use VLC, which can play everything. About a year ago, I downloaded some media that was HI10P, VLC 2.0.4 could not play it... This was fixed in 2.0.5 and above though. But if you need a secondary Player than can allow Codecs to be added, you want MPC-HC.

Indeed, the upgrade was cheap, originally that is. I think they expected us to all switch over to the Video Tile, which does not play any high-quality files like MKV.
