    Win 8.1 Update 1 Pro 32-bit

I've had exactly the same issues you have had. Take a look at my system specs and you will see we have very similar systems (built in 2007 w/ Vista originally). I have narrowed the issue to a combination of the older 64-bit architecture of AMD CPU's on HP Pavilions and the more modern graphics cards. Windows 8 and this combination just don't like each other, and that includes the installer.

When I took the newer card out and used the onboard graphics, the 64-bit version installed perfectly, but was very slow. I placed the newer card back in and the screen scrambled. During installation, of course, this usually causes an error and your old OS is reinstalled.

Only the 32-bit version of Windows 8 and now 8.1 install and work very well on my system. Interestingly, when I originally upgraded to Windows 7, I installed the 64-bit version and it performed perfectly.

With only 2GB of memory, you don't want the 64 bit. You only need 64 bit if you have 4GB or more.

The reason is that 64 bit takes more memory for everything it does. And since you only have 2GB, you want to make the best use of your memory. A 32 bit OS will work much better for you.

Why do you want 64 bit? There is very little performance advantage in it for most applications..
