Associate NNTP Protocol to a specific app in Window 8

Background:
I have an desktop application I use for nntp, but I can't associate nntp with my app in windows 8. I never had a problem on windows 7 and prior.


Question:
How do I manually configure windows8 that nntp should be handled by my application? When I go through control panel, it only lets me add apps from windows app store, or Google Chrome. I do not see how to add my app to the list of apps.

In the classic Control Panel, find "Associate a file type or protocol with a program" ans scroll all the way down. Is NNTP listed under protocols?
If so, what happens when you click "Change program"?
If not, what kind of software is it? Does it come with the installer?

Yes, I've read what you had stated above, but it was not clear where exactly you had performed this operation. That was the reason for my question, as I prefer not to guess.

The reason for this question was that the software developer should've taken care of registering the software with all the protocols it supports. It is usually done at the installation time and taken care by the software installer. Portable apps don't do that...

Thank you for the additional info. The app I'm using doesn't set this properly in Windoiws 8, due to the changes in file and protocol associations from Windows 7 and prior to Windows 8. It is a regular app, not a portable.

Looks like I cannot set the association manually, as the core question asks. I cannot set it in Windows 8 either, as the option to select my own application doesn't exist, it would appear.

Yes you can.

Right click on your file, select open with. Click on "more options" (if it appears) then scroll to the bottom and there click on "Pick another app on this PC". Then navigate to the application in Program Files or Program Files x86.

(Click on the box at the top that says "Make this the default for all xxxxx files" if you wish.)

Thanks for the info. This isn't about a file, it's about a protocol. Say I have a protocol called xyz:// that I would like to have a specific application open with, how would you set that manually in Windows 8? I know how to do it in all over versions of Windows, but it appears to have been locked down pretty tight in Windows 8.

You can. You just have to create the right registry entries first.

I reviewed the links you first provided. The only example I saw that talks about changing the registry values applies to Windows 7. As there is a change between Windows 7 and Windows 8, is there also an example of what explicitly needs to be set in Windows 8 for this to function properly? Bear in mind, I'm not a programmer, I just want to get my application to work properly in Windows 8.

I can't guarantee that this fully applies to Windows 8, but you have to give it your best shot before throwing the towel or looking for specific Windows 8 guides. Just follow the Chromium example and use MSDN for reference. One doesn't have to be a programmer to edit the registry.
