We know W8 has problems -- but let's get the BEST from it

    Hi there
over the last few weeks we've had load and loads of posts (usually from the same group of people) complaining about the SAME features that they believe should either be included or omitted from W8.

I think pretty well everyone on these Forums knows that obviously there are some issues with W8 but let's get the Forum back on track -- by helping people to get the BEST out of W8 / W8.1 either by using little known features (for example a lot haven't yet realized the usefulness of custom toolbars) or third party add ons such as menus / classic shell etc.

Ms isn't going to abandon W8 -- and with CONSTRUCTIVE criticism windows 9 (or whatever it might be called) might contain the BEST of both W7 and W8.

And also W8 itself isn't so difficult to use - even for desktop applications provided you do a little bit of work and don't give up after the first 30 mins or so. (I agree that we SHOULDN'T have to do all this work after installing the OS - so that's a fair criticism but even that has been posted to death too).

Anyway just my take on this one as I think a lot of people are simply getting bored reading the same old posts over and over again when really we should be concentrating on getting the best possible use out of W8/ W8.1

    Cheers

    jimbo

So far, the more posts I read about these 8.1 problems are driving me AWAY from installing 8.1 at all. I got 8, and it works great, so I'm keeping it.

Most of the posts in this area are now hideous Windows 8.1 insidious problems. My advice to everyone, DON'T INSTALL IT. Stick with 8, it's less aggravation.

Jimbo is right MS are not going to abandon Windows 8 but my guess is that their once loyal customers are going to abandon them. No company even one as big as MS can get away with selling something the near majority of people don't like or understand. Windows 7 was developed with productivity in mind but Windows 8 has been developed from top to bottom for profitability in mind only. I read that an estimated .54% of businesses worldwide are using Windows 8 and lets hope for MS sake the figure doesn't go up anymore than this. Windows 8 in a mass enterprise environment would be a complete catastrophe and not just with staff training but also with custom software and most office printers and the like. IMO Windows 8.1 is even worse than the first OS runt of the litter Windows 8.0 or that prematurely born OS, Vista.

That is funny as it is. It doesn't need the next couple of sentences to explain it.

The OS has only been released for 8 months. Most businesses take a minimum of 1 year to evaluate a new OS before even starting to plan a migration. Most of those businesses have been in the process of planning a Migration to Windows 7 because XP is nearing its end of life. As such, it's not surprising that businesses aren't flocking to it, regardless of whether it is terrible or the best thing since sliced bread.

I am, however, seeing a lot of interest in Windows Server 2012, which is Windows 8 for servers. There are a lot of new features in Windows 8, and the new Virtual Machine licensing is very attractive.

I mean, come on.. businesses didn't even start Windows 7 migrations until last year, and Windows 7 came out in 2009!

So please don't pretend that this is some kind of bell weather indicator, as it's simply not.

Windows 8 *IS* more productive than Windows 7 for people that actually give it a chance. I hate going to back to Windows 7 at work. I'm far more productive on 8, and that has nothing whatsoever to do with Metro.

Windows 8 SE may have its problems but it is a preview so stuff is going to happen to some of us. I had issues installing from the app store but a reboot resolved that. Other than that I've been problem free. to what jimbo said. 8 had its problems and we offered help with those so why not offer up the same help for those that installed the SE?

I love windows 8, I believe most people have issues with the EUFI being so stubborn about not allowing things..

Its like the hardware version of "do you want to allow?" from vista!

The metro area is a bit messy, but I expect we will have apps soon to clean that up and organize it.
