We know W8 has problems -- but let's get the BEST from it

With respect to Server 2012, it has some great management features and it has SMB 3.0. And you get an option of loading the OS without a GUI at all.

I've yet to talk to a systems admin who saw that they included the metro garbage in server 2012 and that that it was a good idea. I went to the Windows Server 2012 launch event and everybody, including the MS fanboys were just rolling their eyes.

I don't think 8.0 is a bad OS. But I don't think 8.1 is going to do alot to change most peoples minds. It brings a few extra nicety features to the enable, but doesn't eliminate the things that really drove most people nuts.

We are running it (8 Pro) on about 8 machines at work now, and they are fine. We are all productive still. But many of us on 8 at work, aren't paying money to upgrade 7 at home.

I can't imagine Metro being in Server as being any feature that people who run servers would even WANT.

Read between the lines (MS list of things to be aware of). The simple warning is: "DO NOT install 8.1 Beta on any pc other than a spare one". Ain't got a spare? Wait til 8.1 (finished version) has been released for at least 6 weeks.

I did, and so far, it's been fine apart from a few (to be expected) bugs.

But if I did happen to have problems, there are images of both Win 7 and Win 8 on this machine (plus a known working image of 8.1).

And the other lappy has Win 7, while the desktop runs Vista.

    I'll be OK.

I still have my Dell Precision 370 Workstation, I plan on installing 8.1 Fresh on that. Maybe I'll even install 8, and then up it to 8.1 to see what it does. But I've got 8 pretty much fine-tuned for both of my main machines, I like it, I'll stick with it until I know if I'll like 8.1 better or not. I wasn't expecting top like 8 as it is... I would not be surprised if I like 8.1 - But I'd rather put a full version or at least a newer Beta.

one 8.1 feature i really like is that i can set all apps to show as the default start ,i just fine tune it and can runn all my desktop apps from it , i have a fresh/full install of 8.1 in a duel boot with win8 and find myself booting to it the most now

Yeah, I like that feature, too. It now works much better as a program launcher than the Start Screen ever did. In fact, all my Start Screen is used for, is an app-launcher.

Here's an extract from a post of mine on SF, with a few more tips that may help some readers.

Oh, and Jimbo...thanks for the reminder on the programs menu, I'd used it in the W8 DP, but had forgotten the steps. I'm not actually using it, but wanted it for demonstration purposes.

But in 8.1, you need never even see the Start Screen, and you don't need 3rd-party stuff to do it. Simply right-click on the task-bar then go to Properties>Navigation. There, you can customise how Win 8.1 starts, and what it starts to. See pic 1 below.

The All Apps screen can be accessed directly now, without having to go through the Start Screen. All Apps is still somewhat shambolic, but new customising options do help. With a few more options (like being able to hide and move tiles more easily), it could become a viable Start menu. The potential is there. See pic 2 below.

There are at least two ways to get a replacement (of sorts) for the Win 7 Start menu without resorting to 3rd-party programs like Classic Shell or StartIsBack. Firstly, there's the old and all-but-forgotten Quick-Launch tool bar.

Enable Quick-Launch toolbar by first unlocking the taskbar. Then right-click on the task-bar and go Toolbars>New Toolbar. Then drill down to C:\Users\Username\AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Internet Explorer. Highlight, but do not open, the Quick Launch Folder, then click on OK. Go back to the task-bar, and you'll see it is enabled. Configure it by moving the two vertical bars, then re-lock the task-bar. Done! See pic 3 below.

There's also a version of the old 'Win 95/98/XP classic' Start menu cleverly hidden in 8 and 8.1 as well. I used it on the Win 8 DP before I discovered 3rd-party fixes, and it works reasonably well.

Enable 'Classic' Start Menu by following Jimbo's tutorial here... More Than 3 Out of 4 Enthusiasts Reject Windows 8 - Page 18 - Windows 7 Support Forums See pic 4 below.

All screenshots taken from Windows 8.1 preview.
With a few of these mods, plus turning unwanted features like SkyDrive, universal search, and the calls home to MS, I'm actually quite liking 8.1

I've added the pics referred to in the quote.

So, you can use the same Wallpaper for Metro as you have set for Desktop? That's kind of useful...

Yeah, it's no big deal, but at least now you can do it natively, you don't need a Start Screen customizing program/app.

But too bad if you want the Start Screen/All Apps pic to be different to your desktop wallpaper...that still isn't happening.

    Still, it's a Start... (sorry!!).
