First off, welcome to Windows 8 Forums.

Overclocking Failed? Heh happens to me all the time.

You are probably going to have to do a fresh install. I see it FAILED, it gave you a Blue Screen during Boot.

Well, from what I can see, it is only giving you ONE option: You can RESET your PC, which means it will delete everything, possibly even your User Documents and Data.

Before you do anything else, download Hiren's Boot CD, if you can- Make it happen use a friends computer if you have to. You can burn it to disk or copy it onto a Flash Drive, there are steps you can take to do that but I won't go into it now, just get the ISO image. After you get it and make a Disk from the ISO, Scan your hard drive using "Dos Programs - Hard Drive Tools - GWscan". Just make sure the drive is ok, right?

After you have checked your drive, you can boot to Mini-XP - NAW, we don't wanna be paid dude, ahahaha! Look just hang tight, let me see what I can do here. Boot to Mini-XP and run a full CHKDSK on the drive, this is just for safety's sake.

After you have done all that, reboot to Hiren's and use Mini-XP, it's in the menu just click the down arrow until it is Highlighted. It should boot your system and now you can access your drive. Connect a USB drive or even connect another hard drive to the system if you can and COPY all of your important data! Because from what I am seeing here, you WILL have to reformat the disk, so the most important things is going through all of your folders one by one and saving anything you need.

Once you've backed up what you absolutely need, and I am urging you not to rush this, take as much time as is needed- You can use the Partition Wizard which is in Mini-XP to delete your partition. Just delete it.

You should then be able to do a fresh install of Windows 8, it will ask you how you want to format your drive, or it may do it automatically, you should probably just let it go Automatically.

After you get Windows 8 back in, don't try to downgrade it again. Hopefully, all your Docs and files will be able to be copied back on the system drive.

Don't worry - This has happened to me a dozen times and I've used Hiren's to access my data and move it to a safe place.

The only other thing you can do it open your system, take the hard drive OUT, connect it to another system and copy your files that way.

Now I know this is not what you wanted to hear, but all I'm concerned with is getting you able to save your important files. Hiren's is probably the best way you can do this, for the situation you are in.

Keep us posted on your progress. Programs can be re-installed, but once Windows "resets" and it deletes your personal data, well, it's GONE. So you will have to manually back it all up.

Is there any way to do this through Ubuntu?

If you can move your Files, yes - But you will have to MOUNT the drive, and also the USB drive and set it to it can read and move files from NTFS volumes. can you do it? Ubuntu is great, but I always suggest Hiren's Boot CD simply because you can do the CHKDSK right from a link they provide from within Mini-XP, then you can shut off the 24 hour time limit and copy all the files by drag and drop - Which uses Teracopy which is much faster than copying from Explorer.

I really don't want to do it the way you said but I guess it's the only way...
I also have so many program files that I hate making shortcuts to everything...
Is there anyway to combine the registry files of my old Windows 8, so it has like pretty much everything restored?

Look, that's what caused the problems in the first place.

Once you re-install Windows 8, get Classic Shell or Start 8 and it will list your Programs again, after you have reinstalled them. You will have to do that, there is no other way. Once they are all in, you can drag out Desktop Shortcuts, but they'll still be in the Program Menu made by Start 8 or Classic Shell.

From what I saw in the video, you've basically lost whatever you had installed in there, irrecoverably.

As far as dragging it all back into the Program Files folder, you can do that with some programs, but sometimes they also install files to other areas.

Have you done this Registry Restoration in Windows 7 or any other OS? It simply may not work for 8 and then you'll end up with a new hosed installation. I've lost the entire contents of my systems dozens of times - That's why IU keep copies of the Installers for all of my main programs, and I've got some rare programs, but I've never lost anything, because I keep the installers all backed up in more than one place.

You don't know what you have till you look.

At about 3.30 in your video, you are on a screen where you can bring up the WinRE command prompt, which gives you a few limited options. You can use the command prompt to run some simple windows programs, like notepad, and then using the file open dialog, and selecting Files of Type... All Files, you have basic file explorer functions to check if all your important files are safe. If the files are there, and you can use Ubuntu, you can back up stuff to cloud or external storage, or to another partition.

If you have lost some or all of your files, that's another problem. There are some file recovery programs, but I don't have any experience with them.

Then you can clean the windows boot and system partitions - I'd just delete them and create new primary partitions, then reinstall Windows, whichever version you wish.

Following instructions can be good, sometimes - on your BIOS screen it recommends that you press F1 to get to the setup to correct the overclock failure. I'd do that first.

Not enough information, I'm afraid.

What says it needs to be formatted?

At least try to help yourself by letting us know what you have tried before getting this information.

You said you had a Windows.old folder at some point - it did not need formatting at that point - what has changed since?

Then you have lost the entire contents, the entire drive may be corrupt. If you run the Drive Testing tools I asked you to run in my first post, that may get your partition back. The partition may be there but the MBR may have been written over, or you have read element failure somewhere else on the drive. GWscan can fix that. You are going to have to run it before you do anything, it's not just a matter of simply wiping the drive now, you are going to have to check the whole surface and not with CHKDSK, you can use GWscan or WDDiag if you have a WD drive. Run those first, then boot to Mini-XP and run the CHKDSK from there. After that, open the drive in Mini XP and see if your files are thered. Copy them out and then delete the partition, re-create it while installing Windows 8, there are advanced drive options when you get to the part where you choose which drive it is going to be installed on.

But the more I see, I think you had already irrecoverably lost the contents of your drive, after the Windows came up and said it needed to Reset the PC. I think it was lost then at that point. But there is no way to know this until you do what I asked.

I need you to run a full disk scan on your Drive, you can download GWscan from here:

Gateway Support - Download and Extract GWSCAN

Or, you can download Hiren's Boot CD from the link below my Fringe Pic, and GWscan is included in it's Dos Programs, as well as many other Hard Drive tools. However you do it, I;d like you to run a full surface scan on your drive. If you have Read Element Failure, GWscan can fix it, and then you can go ahead an move your files off the drive.

Were you able to see the disk contents in Ubuntu? That's the main question here, your Install disk seems to be saying the drive is empty. We just want to make sure it really is empty, or if the contents are still there and you can't see them because the Drive has some bad spots and can't be read properly. Because my main concern is getting you access to your files.

I believe the windows.old folder is a working windows directory which you will have to rename to just windows plus rename or copy your old program files directories, etc...

XWeAponX is correct in asking you to backup your data first.

If I may suggest you clone your drive to another drive and work with the clone leaving your original drive untouched, so that no matter what happens good or bad you have your original untouched drive.

Its a small investment to ensure data safety and you can always use that drive later once your windows is fixed..

It looks like your windows or even your partition is not being found, everything I see is boot loader, no actual windows access.

The member SIW2 has posted on this forum success in doing what you want, but he says it was an enormous job.

http://www.eightforums.com/installation-setup/10836-restoring-windows-old-file.html

Heres another link on how its done in windows 7 just for reference, so you have an idea of what needs to be done.

How to restore a Windows 7-based computer to a previous Windows installation by using the Windows.old folder

I strongly urge you to clone the drive first, a full clone not just the data....

Have you added an additional harddrive to your system since the mishap, maybe thats why its not seeing your windows partition.

I would first attempt to repair the boot and see if it can get passed that point.. Ive had great success repairing boot issues with a Windows 7 boot repair instead of the win 8 boot repair, win 8 always wants you to reinstall, whereas win 7 will actually fix the problem.

Dont take any shortcuts here, backup that drive........

I think the Windows partition is unaccessible but before I went to bed I booted up into MiniXP I ran a few file recoverys and I found a lot of my pictures.

That's Great - Also take into consideration Cloning the drive as Brooklyn says. I have a "Brute Force" approach to fixing my stuff, seems you have as well. At one time I would have tried what you described in your Video, but over the years, I realised that my FILES are what's important, I've got Terabytes of Pictures, Music, Movies, and Projects made by various Music recording programs like Sonar and Pro Tools. It is MOST important to me to be able to install the exact same version of any program I used to create a Sound or Video project, so I have the installers and serial numbers and keys, and emails with them saved as well.

It sounds like you used the Key from a lesser version of Windows to try that "downgrade" therefore losing access to programs, but I'll bet the actual programs and their executables were still there. just the links/aliases/Shortcuts to them being lost.

So ahead and find the most important files and do the Cloning if you think it will help, if you have a "Windows.old" folder I'll bet most of your sfutt if is in it - I've never tried to recover what's in there, but if Brooklin knows a way, we'll just save the whole Windows.old folder somewhere and restore it if we can.

still recoverable since you have not written anything to the drive. clone it first, then we can repair your windows and restore your data..

If you really do not want to clone your drive, then I would run the win 7 boot repair option in your win 7 dvd.

You mean, run the Windows 7 Boot Repair on a windows 8 installation, that MAY work, If it locates the Windows installation, it may fix it. He'll lose the Modern Boot GUI, it will revert to the Windows 7 Boot Manager.
